The advantages of online learning are many, including: anywhere/anytime learning, student centered approach, and access to resources. Disadvantages, both real and perceived – include things like lack of access to technology and isolation. Many, who have not experienced the online environment, will also cite the inability to get to know students as a major disadvantage. This presentation will discuss the experiences of one faculty member, teaching in the Career MPH Program. Using humorous examples, the presenter will look at the following two questions: a) What did I learn about my students? and, b) What did my students learn about me? This presentation will make the case that not only can you get to know your students in an online environment, you can develop deeper relationships with them than you might in a traditional face-to-face environment. The differences between online and face-to-face teaching environments will also be explored.
