IB English Literature 11/12 @ Citadel High School

Fred Wolno

Introduction:

This description of the course has been prepared for students and parents/guardians to provide as much clarity as is possible at this time regarding a course that runs over four semesters (begins September, 2013) and how it will be delivered at CHS. This course “tests out” in May, 2015.

For reasons to do with scheduling and staffing fluctuations that can occur between one school year and the next I am only able to provide specific details regarding two of the four units covered in this course. I have, however, included general details with regard to the course’s overall structure as designed by IBO and as it is planned to be rolled out at this time.

Along with Mrs. M. Shaw (one section), I will be teaching IB HL and SL students (two sections) during the first semester of this course; Mrs. M. Shaw is scheduled to teach all of the IB English 11 students during the second semester. During the first semester the students will attend English class every day*. During the second semester, students attend every other day*.

Syllabus Outline:

1. Options: (begins and will be completed during Semester One of this course; note that these titles are for my two sections only))

SL: Three works

HL: Three works

(Works are freely chosen in any combination.)

The works chosen are as follows: i) Lord of the Flies by William Golding (novel); ii) “The Future of an Illusion” by Sigmund Freud (essay); iii) A collection of poems, the majority of which are by Margaret Avison (Canadian poet; past recipient of the Governor General’s Award for Poetry).

Major assessment (internal) attached to this unit is the Individual Oral Presentation, worth 15% of the course’s final. (Further details regarding this assessment can be found further down on the same web page that contains this document.)

2. Works in Translation: (begins in Semester One; to be completed during Semester Two—texts are common to the entire IB English 11/12 program here at CHS)

SL: Two works

HL: Three works

(All works are chosen from the titles in the prescribed literature in translation list from IBO.)

The works chosen are as follows: i) Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (transl. from Spanish by Gregory Rabassa) (SL/HL); ii) The Outsider by Albert Camus (transl. from French by Joseph Laredo) (SL/HL); iii) Angigone by Sophocles (transl. from Greek by E.H. Plumptre)

Major assessment (external) attached to this unit is the Written Assignment (formerly known as the “World Lit. Essay”), worth 25% of the course’s final.

3. Detailed Study: (begins during Semester Two; to be completed during Semester Three)

SL: Two works

HL: Three works

(All works are chosen from the titles on the prescribed language A list from IBO and must be from different genres.)

Major assessment (internal) attached to this unit is the Individual Oral Commentary, worth 15% of the course’s final. Also, work done for this unit will help prepare students for their Exam Paper # 1: Guided Literary Analysis, worth 20% of the course final.

4. Literary Genres: (begins Semester Three; to be completed Semester Four)

SL: Three works

HL: Four works

(All works are chosen from the titles on the prescribed language A list from IBO and must be from the same genre.)

Major assessment (external) attached to this unit is the Exam Paper Two: Essay, worth 25% of the course’s final.

* HL and SL students are combined into the same sections for this course. You will notice that the HL students are expected to complete three more works than their SL counterparts. Therefore, periodically during this course, SL students will have the option to use class time as study periods in order to work on materials/assignments for other courses they are taking.
