DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Case Study (Tourism, Hospitality & Events sector)
This assignment (for groups of three or four) is broken into part 1. Group and part 2. Individual contributions. The assignment tests a group of student’s abilities to blend their knowledge of academic research in the field of CSR with the practical CSR programs of a specific business within the hospitality, tourism or event sectors. The focus of this assignment is to investigate the CSR activities of an organisation and assess them against academic literature in the field of study. The assignment should be considered as an executive report and broken into three distinct sections. The first task a) is to precis three journal articles, seeking to understand the research undertaken, the key findings and the context to a particular industry sector. This section should take no more than 1000 words, the second section b) of the report is the case study of CSR programs within the selected organisation, the third section c) seeks to find links between sections a) & b) and show how your investigations have shown a blendingacademic theory and commercial practice. It may be the case that your selected organisation could improve the efficiency and effectiveness of its CSR activities and therefore your group is encouraged to make suggestions of how the theory could be better applied.
Part 1. A. – Literature Review
You are to select three (3) peer reviewed journal articles relating to Corporate Social Responsibility in the Tourism, Hospitalityor Events sectors. Ensure where possible the articles selected for review have a connection to the individual sector you are focusing upon for your case study company. You may use one of the journal articles listed on Collaborate but need to search for two other CSR articles yourselves.
-Your role is to write a (literature review)or synopsis of each of the three articles that you have selected ensuring that you discuss the key themes, research methodology employed, the results and what those results mean in the context of that sector whether that be; tourism, hospitality or events.
Part 1.B. – Case study analysis of a company within (tourism/hospitality/events sector) and its CSR programs
-Choose a company operating within tourism, hospitality or events. Your group needs to conduct preliminary research on this company to ensure that you will be able to access sufficient and appropriate material regarding that company’s CSR programs, and ensure that they actually operate such programs in their business.
-Provide a short introduction that explains the nature and brief history of the company
-Discuss the range of activities that comprise its CSR program(s) and if possible classify them.
-Review what examples of verification (if any) are available that can confirm the performance of the company’s CSR program and whether these sources can be deemed to be independent.
Please DO NOT contact the company directly.
Your research should be based on secondary sources only. It is expected that both academic and non- academic sources will be considered in your research on the organisation. Therefore company websites, annual reports, newspaper articles, trade journals and other third party sources should be used to gather the information required of your targeted case study company. Where sustainability reports are published by the organisation these should be examined.
Part 1. C.
Look at the research findings in Part A and investigate whether there are potential links between the theoretical issues identified by your literature review (in Part A) and whether these issues and findings are identified in the CSR programs of your case study company. Discuss your findings.
-In conclusion and based not only on your review of the company’s operations but the theoretical perspective make any recommendations or comments that you believe would improve the effectiveness of the company’s CSR programs.
