I have only one thing to say....used older machine on KSL.com.....no kidding, there are some good ones on there. Just my opinion. Wilson, Matheson Jr. Hi
I really like Kenmore. They are easy to use, easy to get serviced (there is a Sears everywhere) and they are the right price. When I was in high school my mom bought me one (that was about 10 years ago) and I have had no problems with it and it has been able to do everything I have ever wanted to do. In my classroom we had Berninas but I think that Kenmore is just as good for a lot less money.
I hope that helps.

I also vote for the Bernina. I love them! Ronda
Hi Denise,
I have been told by Ken Harker, St George Bernina Dealer for years, that Baby Lock sewing machines are a really good deal for the money and pretty well built with lots of nice features. Ken sold me my first Bernina when I was a sophomore at Delta High and I have purchased many Berninas for classrooms from him over the years. I was surprised to have him recommend Baby Lock to me. His comment was that Bernina is pricing themselves out of the market. So take a look at Baby Lock, he even recommended them for the classroom.

I had an elna (I think the number is 1010) when I first started sewing and I loved it. I still use it from time to time. They are usually inexpensive and they are good machinesSorenson, Ann"
Some of the Brother models at Walmart are pretty good.

Check JoAnne’s. Last I saw was a Singer machine for $99. Might be a good way to start. I didn’t check out the machine,I just noticed the display. Good Luck.
I bought my daughter a Brother from Wal-Mart-quite hesitantly but it has
turned out to be quite durable and dependable and I have even used it
when my machine has bee in the shop. Inexpensive from Wal-Mart, some
plastic parts but easy to clean and maintain.

Get Bernini’s if you can.
I love my Pfaffs. Have had 2 different machines in the classroom for over 20 years, had them in my home for over 40. They need very little maintenance, clean, oil and you're good to go. They also have a built in automatic needle threader and a built in dual feed (walking foot) that can be used w/every presser foot except the buttonhole foot.
I liked the Bernina's, but wouldn't go back to them. I get better service and prices w/Pfaff.

I BELIEVE IN Bernina 1008 manuals, over the computerized ones. Around $800.00 but will last their whole life and almost impossible to have a bad sewing experience or breakdowns.
I liked the Bernina 1008 (or was it 1080). It was simple to learn, durable and relatively inexpensive. The only drawback I found was that the post you slid the bobbin onto was plastic - but there is a replaceable metal version - if she breaks it. The nice thing about Berninas, so I'm told, is that you can trade them in toward a new one later, they are servicable (for life?) and you can purchase used ones (helping in the price).
Good luck to your friend!

I bought a VERY inexpensive one at Walmart and it was a Singer, which I knew was a good brand. I've used it quite a bit and it works just fine. It's very basic, but would certainly give her the ability to sew. You might check it out at Walmart - I think it was only about $99 if I recall..... Good luck. Don't invest much, I taught all of my girls to sew, but only decided that she really needed a machine and that wasn't til she was about 25. :) Paula

Bernina has a smaller machine about $200.00 called a Janome. I bought one for my brother's wife and she loves it. How about getting a used reconditioned Bernina?
