How-To Make A Living

Transportation: It’s time to make your move around town!

1.  Get an ad for a car that lists the sales price and whether or not it’s new or used. Attach to a piece of paper. Then answer the following questions on the same paper:

2.  What attracted you to that particular car? What features (4 door, a/c, cd, etc….) make it the car for you?

3.  Now, figure out how you are going to pay for it. Go to this website (or something similar) and calculate your monthly payment:

a.  www.carsdirect.com/auto-loans/car-loan-calculator

4.  Estimate the amount of gas you will need for each month. Gas right now costs per gallon. You will need to fill up once a week and your tank holds gallons of gas.

5.  Estimate your car insurance per month.

6.  Include ad for car & insurance quote.

Food: You gotta eat!

1.  Your cupboards are completely bare. Your brand new apartment does not have one thing in it. List the top 20 food items you will need to buy and determine their prices. Use either the internet or go to the grocery store to get exact amounts. Add up this amount.

My Grocery List from: www.vons.com:

1. Oroweat Bread $5.49

2. Cheerios $5.19

Total cost for one week: ______

2.  Estimate how much money you think you will need for a month’s worth of groceries based on the above amount.

3.  Is this more or less than you expected to pay? Explain

Household Expenses: There’s more to your expenses than food!

1.  Besides food there are many things you need to survive. Think of the many essentials you will need: soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, shampoo, cleaning products, and many more. Make a list of the top 20 things you will need to keep your house functioning. Use either the internet or go to the grocery store to get exact amounts. Add up this amount.

2.  Estimate how much money you think you will need for a month’s worth of groceries based on the above amount.

Clothing & Entertainment: You need a life!

1.  What will you spend on clothing each month? Describe what you will spend your money and how much it will cost. How much does each item cost approximately? For some of you, it may be little to nothing, but, remember, at some point you will need to buy clothes and/or shoes. So, try to imagine what you might buy in 3 or 4 months and average the cost for one month.

2.  What will you spend on entertainment each month? Describe what you will spend your money and how much it will cost. Don’t forget to include things like going to the movies, eating out, buying a cd or video game…

·  How often do you think you’ll go out to eat? Include fast food, pizza delivery, and sit down restaurants. How much will it cost you? Explain.
