FASC - Assigning Faculty to Sections in which Contact Hours and Credit Hours are Not Equal

Problem

Colleague does not correctly calculate faculty load when the credit hours and contact hours for a section are not equal. This is because Colleague expects that an instructor be assigned for each Instructional Method used in a section. Typically, sections (in which contact hours and credit hours are not equal) are composed of two instruction methods, Lecture and Lab. Both of these instructional methods must be assigned to the instructor for load to be correctly calculated. If both methods are not assigned, upon exiting from the FASC screen Colleague will generate an error message indicating that faculty load does not equal section load.

Procedure

In the following example, section 001, fall 1999, of Lan 113 Spanish I (3 credits, 4 contact hours) is to be assigned to Professor Amparo Codding.

1.  Call up the FASC screen for the section.

2. Assign the section to Professor Codding by entering "q" in the ST box on line 1 and selecting her name from the resolution screen. You may also click on Edit→Wide Edit, key in the name, then selecting her name from the resolution screen that appears. (Alternatively, if you know her Colleague ID number you may enter it in the Faculty Lookup dialog box.)

By doing this, you will have assigned the Instructional Method of Lecture, which for Lan 113 carries a load of three hours. The resulting Colleague screen will look like this:

3. Next assign the Instructional Method of Laboratory for this section to Professor Codding by placing your cursor on line 2, clicking on Edit→Wide Edit, and entering "@" in the Faculty Lookup dialog box. Then hit enter.

At this point the field for Instructional Method should be highlighted on line 2. It will probably say "LECT." (If this field is not highlighted, click on it.) Type "LAB" in this field and press the enter key. The result will look like this:

4. Save your work by either hitting the F9 key or by selecting File→Save from the menu. If you get an error message indicating that faculty load and section load do not agree, then you have made a mistake. mdr
