HOT AND HEAVY HIRING SEEN IN 2018

HEALTHCARE, TECH, BUT ALSO FOOD

Wall Street was soaring as 2017 came to an end, with the economy seen as set to benefit from Republican tax changes. Employers of all sizes are expected to boost hiring in 2018—and the online hiring site Glassdoor has identified 18 big companies which are expected to add thousands of new hires in 2018.

Glassdoor’s chief economist, Dr. Andrew Chamberlain, says the growth will come in some fields that you would expect—such as healthcare and tech—but also in some others that you might not expect. “Job creation in 2018 is being driven not only by innovations in tech, which will continue to expand within traditionally non-tech industries, but by significant demographic shifts such as an aging population,” he says. “Many traditional jobs like restaurant waiters and truck drivers that cannot be automated easily in the near term will continue to grow and be a core source for jobs,” he adds.

Who’s expected to be hiring lots of new employees this year? First on the Glassdoor list is Amazon. The fast-growing online retail giant is adding staff in such places as Seattle, WA; Cambridge, MA; Sunnyvale, CA; Herndon, VA; Chicago, IL and, eventually, the site selected for its second headquarters operation. While high-paying tech jobs require serious credentials, the company also needs lots of lower-skilled workers to move all of that merchandise.

The Home Depot has locations nationwide, with major hiring seen in Atlanta, GA; Lake Delton, WI; Jacksonville, FL; Franklin, TN; Dayton, OH; Charlotte, NC and elsewhere. Liberty Mutual Insurance, noted for great employee benefits, is hiring in Dover, NH; Boston, MH; Indianapolis, IN; Rochester, NY; Plano, TX; Chandler, AZ and more.

In fast food, Glassdoor notes that Panda Express, a family-owned restaurant concept, is hiring at numerous locations and offering “great pay and benefits” for the sector. And having been recently acquired by Amazon, Whole Foods Market is on a major hiring binge. One open position noted is “full time cheese buyer.”

With businesses set to grow rapidly, consulting firm Deloitte is set to add thousands of employees to help advise its clients. Long a desirable place for careers in cutting-edge tech, IBM is hiring big in 2018. Also on the Glassdoor list are such varied employers as Kohl’s department stores, rival Target, GEICO insurance, Bank of America, Lowe’s, Microsoft, Merck, McKinsey & Company, Costco and Intel.

That’s a list that cuts across all sorts of industries and the jobs range from low-skill to very high level education and experience requirements. What it demonstrates is that the U.S. economy is hot and there are employment opportunities at all levels—and in many locations.

MORE TRUST OF SELF-DRIVING CARS

Consumers are warming up to the concept of fully self-driving vehicles, but some roadblocks may lay ahead for automakers, according to a new study by Deloitte. Significantly fewer people in the 2018 study feel that autonomous cars will not be safe, with less than half (47%) of U.S. consumers holding this view. That’s a dramatic decrease from 2017, when 74% felt autonomous vehicles would not be safe.

“Overall acceptance of autonomous technology has grown rapidly in just a short time,” said Craig Giffi, vice chairman, Deloitte LLP. “However, driverless cars are still in an experimental stage, and the industry is at the front-end of a long capital investment cycle required to bring autonomous vehicle technology to the mainstream market.”

Almost three-quarters (71%) of U.S. respondents said they would be more likely to ride in an autonomous vehicle if they had an established safety record, up just slightly from 68% percent in the 2017 study. Taking that a step farther, more consumers are turning to trusted brands for reassurance around the safety of autonomous technologies. Nearly two-thirds of U.S. consumers (63%) report they would be more likely to ride in an autonomous vehicle if it was from a brand they trust, compared to 54% in 2017. Consumers’ faith in brands appears to strengthen with younger consumers, as 70% of the Gen Y/Z population reported they would be more likely to accept a self-driving vehicle from a trusted brand, compared to 62% of Gen X and 56% of Boomer/ Pre-Boomer consumers.

Not completely trusting the industry, many consumers would put their trust in federal regulation. More than half of U.S. consumers (54%) reported they would feel better about riding in self-driving cars if governments would implement standards and regulations.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING RECAP: BIG GAINS

The annual Post-Holiday Shopping Survey from the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) confirms that consumer spending was up. This year’s survey showed that the average spend on gifts and other holiday-related items was $841.50 this season, compared to $711 last year.

Retailers benefited from the longer season with almost 30% of consumers beginning their shopping in October or earlier and more than half (51%) of consumers completing their shopping the week before Christmas. In fact, 10% of those surveyed finished their shopping on Super Saturday, showing the shopping season runs right through the final holiday weekend.

Consumers used a variety of channels for holiday shopping, with 90% making purchases in a physical store, 40% using click and collect and 46% ordering online from retailers with a physical presence and shipping the product home. Of those who used click and collect, 90% bought additional items once in stores. 62% of holiday shoppers ordered from pure play online retailers.
