Honors English IVOutside Reading Assignment

Book Requirement:A fictionnovel chosen from the AP Reading list or another teacher approved novel. Must be at least 250 pages in length and cannot be made into a movie. Also, Nicholas Sparks books are off limits for this assignment. Choose something challenging. Pulitzer Prize winning books could also be good choices.

Due Dates:

Tuesday, April17, 2012—Outside reading novel choice is due. You must have your novel in hand to show the teacher. 50 point assignment.

Wednesday, May 2, 2012—Outside reading projects are due.

Assignment:

I. Novel Presentation: (150 points)

You will present your book to the class. After reading the novel, create a gimmick for your book. This gimmick may be a visual aid in the form of objects, your dress, posters, etc.. Or your gimmick could be in the form of music or anything that suits your novel. Be creative in thinking of how you want to present it. Of course, you can do a Power Point but think outside the box, too. Perhaps, an advertisement, jingle, poem, T-shirt design. movie poster, trailer, monologue would work for you. Don’t go crazy and spend a $100 on craft supplies but make it memorable!!! Do not reveal the resolution of the novel to the class. Your purpose is to sell your book. You should convince the audience that your book is the one to read. You may not reveal the resolution of the novel. You should write the resolution in a paragraph and turn that in. This presentation should run 3-5 minutes.

Presentation Grading Criteria:

*Demonstrates depth of thought about the novel!

*Does NOT contain excessive summary.

*This presentation should give a complete discussion of the literary genre and author’s style within the novel.

*Setting of novel

*Characters (Pick only the most important 3-5 characters. Briefly describe each and explain their importance.)

*Theme(s) (show reflection and analysis)

*Significant passage from novel

*Include a complete discussion of imagery or other figurative devices used.

*Student speaks clearly and loudly where everyone can hear.

*Student makes eye contact throughout the presentation. IF notes are used, they are on a notecard. Most of the presentation is from student’s memory.

*The visual/gimmick is creative, visually appealing, and large enough to be seen when displayed in the room. (Title and author should be visible, even if really small.)

*Author Background

II. Book Reaction: (50 points) one page typed maximum (12 point, Times New Roman, double spaced)

In a one-page typed reaction, explain why you selected this particular book/topic/person, how the reading has affected you as an individual, your philosophy, etc. (How the book made you feel or think differently). Be sure to express your enlightenment rather than summarizing the reading. This is similar to a poetry response, but about a longer work.
