BELLWORK:

AGREEMENT RULE 3

The number of the subject is not changed by a phrase following the subject.

Remember that a verb agrees in number with its subject, NOT with the object of a preposition. The subject is never part of a prepositional phrase.

EXAMPLES

The sign near the glass doors explains the exhibit.

The paintings of Emilio Sanchez were hanging in the gallery.

Compound prepositions such as together with, in addition to, and along with following the subject do not affect the number of the subject.

EXAMPLES

Anne, together with her cousins, is backpacking in Nevada this summer.

Robert, along with Jean and Tom, has been nominated for class president.

EXERCISE THREE (Verbal – Say these sentences aloud and check for correct agreement using the steps below.)

  1. The rules in this textbook are guidelines for using standard English.
  2. Mastery of these rules leads to improvement in speaking and writing.
  3. The correct use of verbs is especially important.
  4. Correct spelling, in addition to correct usage of verbs, is an essential writing skill.
  5. People in the business world look carefully at letters of application.
  6. Letters with nonstandard English do not make a good impression.

a. Is there a phrase between the subject and the verb? (If so, mark through it.) Why?

b. What is the subject?

c. What is the verb?

d. Do they agree in number?

Since it is so important to know the different types of tone an author may employ, our Vocabulary over the next few weeks will be taken directly from the Tone/Attitude Words. You will be quizzed as follows:

#1-16 Quiz on Friday, Nov. 18

#17-32 Quiz on Friday, Dec. 2

#33-48 Quiz on Friday, Dec. 9

Test over all 48 words the last week of school before Christmas break.

3.  Read the essay “The Plastic Pink Flamingo” by Jennifer Price on pg. 31-32 of the Sample Questions for English Language and Composition handout.. Annotate text, specifically looking for information needed to address the prompt. Turn in a list of the three points you would make if you were to write an essay to address this prompt.

4.  On the back of the essay write a response to the following:

  1. Do you, personally, agree with her argument? Why or why not?
  2. List five things the author does well in this essay.
  3. List any things the author could have done better in this essay.

Exercise 6 Commas

Use a highlighter or colored pen to place commas in the appropriate place(s) in each of the following sentences.

1.  In 1984 Geraldine Ferraro a New York congresswoman become the first female vice –presidential candidate on a major party ticket.

2.  However she wasn’t the first woman to seek high office for Victoria Woodhull was the presidential nominee of the Equal Rights party in 1872.

3.  To send her daughter to a boarding school Antonetta Ferraro Geraldine’s mother worked as a crochet beader a person who fastens beads and sequins on evening dresses.

4.  Geraldine was very active in school and was in fact named most likely to succeed.

5.  After she graduated from college Geraldine an ambitious woman felt that a job as an elementary-school teacher was not enough.

6.  Consequently she began attending Fordham Law School at night.

7.  Although she married John Zaccaro in 1960 she kept her maiden name professionally.

8.  When her younger daughter was seven years old Geraldine became an assistant district attorney in Queens New York.

9.  Generally speaking that experience gave her many valuable insights into the criminal justice system and helped her to form strong feelings about the rights of victims.

10.  Geraldine Ferraro credits her mother for helping her become a strong yet compassionate person.
