SECTION: PROGRAM MANUAL

TOPIC: DAY AWAY PROGRAM

POLICY TITLE: MEDICAL EMERGENCY

POLICY STATEMENT:

In event of a medical emergency occurring at the program, staff and volunteers will provide care for the injured/ill person to the level commensurate with their training.

PROCEDURE:

INCIDENT OCCURS AT THE FACILITY

1.  Do not move the client in the case of a potential back injury, unless danger is imminent.

2.  Enlist the assistance of another staff member or volunteer. If working in a volunteer capacity, ensure that a staff member is summoned.

3.  One staff member/volunteer will stay with the client, to provide comfort and basic first aid. If a staff member or volunteer is trained in CPR and assesses the client to be in cardiac arrest then CPR will be initiated.

4.  If a staff member is present and is aware there is documentation on the client’s chart indicating this is against the expressed wishes of the client or substitute decision maker, then basic first aid only will be provided and staff will proceed according to policy on No C.P.R. - PM-3-190 (End of Life Care)

5.  The Heimlich Manoeuvre will be performed on all choking clients regardless of “No C.P.R.” directives.

6.  One staff member will call 911 with details of the emergency situation and location whether or not there are End of Life directives or instructions on file.

7.  The same person that has placed the emergency call will then take the Kardex and return to the client in distress.

8.  One staff/volunteer will proceed to the entrance of the facility to escort emergency personnel to the client and will inform any staff of the facility of the emergency in process.

9.  Staff/volunteers remaining with clients must remain calm, not alarming or disrupting to the atmosphere of the program.

10.  Once the client is under the care of the ambulance/emergency attendants, the Family Support Counsellor or the Family Care Coordinator will notify the client's next of kin and the family physician.

11.  Once the emergency has been dealt with, staff will require details from all volunteers involved in the incident in order to complete a report. Staff involved will complete a report of the incident. This report will be filed on the client's chart. A copy will be sent to the Programs Director. (see ADM-6-50 Incident Report)

12.  The Programs Director will be notified verbally on the day of the incident about the incident and the outcome.
