● Team Name: Hocus-Pocus

While struggling to find a proper name for our team, Anica suggested the word 'hocus-pocus'. "Hocus-Pocus" is a word that magicians use when performing magic tricks.

As future business leaders, in a way we need to be magicians within our corporations and work our "magic." The common perception about magicians is that they can pull things out of thin air, make things disappear and then reappear. We hope to be like these magicians to pull ideas and execute them, make something out of nothing. We want to aggressively approach problems within the company and eventually make them disappear. We believe that leaders need to initiate change and make things work in different situations. Without difference or change, companies will not be able to make a difference in the business world of today and this leads to not adding value to the shareholders, employees and customers.

During this semester, our team members will become magicians, initiate change and venture to do new acts that no one has done in the past.

● Regulations

• Lateness: Team members that are late for meetings will pay 500 won per 10 minutes. We have to respect each others' time.

• Decision: We abide by the decisions of majority. Age doesn't always have something to do with wisdom. There will be no hierarchy according to age or major.

• Membership Fee: 5,000 won – We will use this money for group expenses such as print outs, copies etc.

• Participation: No free rides allowed. Every member should participate in every project with enthusiasm.

● A History of G.E. (General Electric)

The year 1876 marked America's centennial. For most Americans it was a time for looking backward with pride. For others it was a time to look forward to the possibilities that lay ahead. The electrical exhibits at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia marked the beginning of an era where people sought new targets for invention.

Later that year, Thomas Alva Edison would open a new and better equipped laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, where he could explore the possibilities of the dynamo and other electrical devices that he had seen in the Exposition. Out of the laboratory was to come perhaps the greatest invention of all - a successful incandescent electric lamp.

By 1890, Edison had organized his various businesses into the Edison General Electric Company. The Thomson-Houston Company and the various companies that had merged to form it were led by Charles A. Coffin, a former shoe manufacturer from Lynn, Massachusetts. These mergers with competitors and the patent rights owned by each company put them into a dominant position in the electrical industry. As businesses expanded, it had become increasingly difficult for either company to produce complete electrical installations relying solely on their own technology. In 1892, these two major companies combined to form the General Electric Company.

Several of Edison's early business offerings are in fact still part of GE today, including lighting, transportation, industrial products, power transmission and medical equipment. The first GE Appliances electric fans were produced at the Ft. Wayne electric works as early as the 1890s, while a full line of heating and cooking devices were developed in 1907. GE Aircraft Engines, the division's name only since 1987, actually began its story in 1917 when the U. S. government began its search for a company to develop the first airplane engine "booster" for the fledgling U.S. aviation industry. Thomas Edison's experiments with plastic filaments for light bulbs in 1893 led to the first GE Plastics department, created in 1930.

GE's leaders through the years have built a diverse portfolio of leading businesses; a stream of powerful Company-wide initiatives that drives growth and reduces cost; financial strength and Controllership that allow it to capitalize on opportunities through numerous cycles; and a set of common values that allows it to face any environment with confidence

●Human Resource Management within a company

According to the authors of ‘Fundamentals of Human Resource Management (McGraw-Hill)’ the definition of Human Resource Management is the policies, practices and systems that influence employees’ behavior, attitudes and performance. Human Resource Management has become an integral part of management. As future managers we no longer can view employees as simple workers but we need to recognize them as Human capital. Human Resource managers need to identify key skills, knowledge, and values required for different positions within the company. They must place the right people in the right jobs. They also need to make sure that the employees are fairly rewarded for their efforts. Making sure that employees are working to a common organizational goal with responsibility is another part of the Human Resource Managers job. Also like other management functions, it has to ensure that these resources are available at an optimal cost. The Human Resource department has to look into various training and development activities to ensure that their employees are receive full support from the company to do their job well. Human Resource Management has to decide which opportunity costs will be more crucial to the company in both a short term and long term view. For example a company might want to budget training and development programs for current employees instead of recruiting and hiring new employees.

Our team thinks that a Human Resource manager’s role in an organization is largely two fold. Human Resource managers must be both a representative of the employers as well as the employees. This is not always an easy task but is one of the reasons that Human Resource Management interests our team members. A Human Resource managers job does not stop at trying to fulfill the needs of both employees and employers, they continue to research things such as analysis and design of work, effective recruiting, training and development, compensation etc.

●Human Resource Management at G.E.

G.E. thinks of Human Resource Management as a source of competitiveness. Functional departments play a very important role in maintaining and developing organization. Sales and financial management had been highlighted in many corporations so far. Lately, corporations are focusing on the importance of Human Resource Management. However, it is hard to compare Human Resource theories between organizations because Human Resources develop along with an organization's culture and specific situations that are given. Many corporations are coming up with Human Resource systems to fit their own corporation culture. Because of this we can not separate Human Resources with the corporation's mission and strategy as a whole. Accordingly, the Human Resource strategy is closely linked with a corporation’s mission statement and business strategy. Under the command of John Welch, one of the best CEO in history, G.E. has been growing rapidly during the past 20 years. Human Resource Management has played an important function supporting G.E.'s high speed expansion. Like most companies, G.E.'s overall goal is to control the expenses and maximization of profits. The strategic approach G.E.’s Human Resource part has taken is a series of process’ that include selection, development, reward, and retention of the very best people in various fields. G.E. defines the "very best" as people who are bright, innovative, risk-takers, competitive, ambitious, and hard-working. As G.E. has risen to a model for many organizations, our team is looking forward to researching how they manage the people who are the “very best” at doing what they do.

●Team Work

As a team we had 3 group meeting to discuss the contents that we have decided above. The first time we met we brainstormed for ideas for our team project and team name, rules and regulations. A few of the team members were acquaintances before they met in this class but also some members had never met before. Our team consists of 2 business majors and 2 English department majors. We are all juniors and seniors. The first couple of meetings were used mostly spending time to preview the material that would be discussed in class and just getting to know each other. By using the text we were able to get to know each other quite well. For example, by asking each other the questions from "Leaders from the top" we were able to have a better understanding of each others values including childhood, family backgrounds, religion.

All our team members are easy going people and are considerate of others. We didn't have many problems while preparing our first team project. The few differences that did occur during our meetings were from the diversity of each individual. But as we have been learning in class having the capacity to understand differences especially in international business is indispensable.

We all know that for our future team work, consideration toward fellow team members is an important key. We recognize that our team members have different schedules, abilities and specialties. As a group we will strive to bring out the best in each other which will further our outcomes as a group. We will be considerate of other team member's time and resources and contribute as much individually as we each can.
