When you have filled in the form, check the details supplied are correct and that ALL SECTIONS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED; sign and date the form, and return to the Research Support Team.

Guidance: An Internal Evaluation shall take place between the 21st and 23rd month for full time candidates, between 35th and 40th month for part time candidates and between 50th and 55th month for Professional Doctorate candidates. More detailed information can be found in “A Guide to: PhD Internal Evaluation”.

Please keep in mind those students requiring reassessment will not be able to register for the following year until successful completion. It is advised therefore that the Internal Evaluation takes place sooner rather than later.

Candidates must ensure that they have relevant and up to date ethical approval. If approval is required the approval confirmation letter MUST be submitted alongside the report.

For each candidate the minimum evaluation panel comprises:

(i) the School’s nominee and;

(ii) another qualified (research active) member of staff (not part of candidates supervisory team and who did not serve on the candidate’s Interim or Transfer Assessment panel)

The Supervisor may be in attendance at this assessment as an observer at the Candidate’s discretion.

This report form is used to recommend to the School Research and Enterprise Committee and Postgraduate Research Award Board confirmation of the status of a doctoral candidate or transfer to an MSc/MPhil/MRes/LL M degree.

Each Postgraduate Researcher is required to submit a substantive piece of work, to demonstrate significant progress as appropriate to this progression point, whose detail shall be determined by the School with regard to the nature of the project undertaken and which shall take account of guidance on form and content offered by the candidate’s School Research and Enterprise Committee.

Any candidate who does not submit their report for evaluation, or who does not present themselves at the panel, will automatically fail the progression point.

The purpose of the Internal Evaluation is to assess whether the candidate is on course to submit a completed piece of work which meets the FHEQ Doctoral Level Descriptors. Doctoral degrees are awarded to students who have demonstrated:

·  the creation and interpretation of new knowledge, through original research or other advanced scholarship, of a quality to satisfy peer review, extend the forefront of the discipline, and merit publication

·  a systematic acquisition and understanding of a substantial body of knowledge which is at the forefront of an academic discipline or area of professional practice

·  the general ability to conceptualise, design and implement a project for the generation of new knowledge, applications or understanding at the forefront of the discipline, and to adjust the project design in the light of unforeseen problems

·  a detailed understanding of applicable techniques for research and advanced academic enquiry.

• appropriate consideration and practicing of research ethics relevant to the work

• appropriate consideration, attendance, and appraisal of training needed for the research and skill development.

Each panel must assess the standard of the work and comment against the above. If, as a panel, it is felt that the work/performance is not to the standard required by the qualification being studied then this should be clearly indicated.
