Higher Education Research Partnership for PhD Studies

The project will commence once the grant letter has been signed and will run for no more than 18 months. The project must commence no later than March 2010 and finish by the end of March 2011.

The deadline for submission of applications is 17:00 Friday 16th October 2009. The research team leaders in Scotland and China should complete this form jointly in English, and send a co-signed copy to British Council China and China Scholarship Council respectively. This can be signed electronically and sent by email.

  1. Joint Research Project

4. Development of collaborative PhDs. The ultimate objective of the Programme is to develop collaborative PhD programmes and ideally offer joint or dual degrees. If this currently proves difficult, please give reasons and outline your plan for the development over the long term.

5. Financial arrangements

Under each research partnership, each partner can send a research team of no more than four people to the other side for up to five working days using the funding provided for mobility grants. Each partner can send PhD students to the other side for up to 18 person-months during the pilot period. These PhD students will stay with the other party for a minimum of three months.

  1. Please attach a typed, detailed project statement of no more than five single-spaced pages (3,500 words) with each page numbered. Format:

(1) Background: Introduce the joint research project. Place the project in academic or professional context by referring to major works by others on the subject.

(2) Objectives: Clearly define the aims of the project.

(3) Methodology: Describe the project. Explain the approach, methods and plan you will use (for example, interviews, library or archival research, or laboratory experiments).

(4) Evaluation and Dissemination: Describe plans for assessment and distribution of research results in your home country and elsewhere.

(5) Justification for Residence in the United Kingdom and China for the Proposed Project: Indicate why it is necessary for the accomplishment of the project to conduct research in both countries.

(6) Duration: Explain how the project can be completed within the time period proposed.

(7) Language Proficiency: Describe the language capability of participating members in the joint project.
