MARYLAND SCHOOL ASSESSMENT (MSA)

We want to thank parents, students and teachers for their hard work, support and cooperation during our MSA efforts. We are extremely proud of our students and are looking forward to their outstanding results. Special thanks to Mr. Morrison, School Testing Coordinator, for all his hard work!

HONOR ROLL PROGRAM

Our 3rd Quarter Honor Roll Assembly will be held on April 25th. Grades 2 and 3 will be honored at an assembly beginning at 9:30 AM and Grades 4 and 5 at the 10:15 AM assembly. We celebrate student achievement by recognizing Citizenship, Most Improved, and/or academic excellence. Students who have earned Perfect Attendance awards will be honored in the individual classrooms.

FIELD DAY TEE SHIRTS – orders and payment due April 11th

Remember to order a field day tee shirt! Each grade level has chosen a color to represent their grade. Custom designed tee shirts will be created in these colors especially for Field Day on May 28th. This custom designed tee shirt may be worn to school on casual Fridays, as well. You are not required to purchase these high quality shirts but your child will need to wear the color selected by his or her grade on Field Day. Order forms were sent home in the Friday folders last week. They are also available in our Main Office.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART ♥

For many years, Montpelier students have supported a very special community service program and this year is no different. On April 9th, we will host a Jump Rope for Heart event. Jump Rope for Heart events are held nationwide and help students learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and heart health while they raise funds to support vital research and educational programs. All donations are welcomed but, if your child donates at least $5.00 by April 9th, he/she will have a non-uniform day on April 11th! Our goal this year is to raise $4,500. Won’t you support this life-saving effort?

MONTPELIER SCIENCE BOWL

The Science Bowl team did a wonderful job at their final competitions. In the first game against Berwyn Heights, the final score was Montpelier-280 and Berwyn Heights-145. In the second game, the lead kept going back and forth between Glenarden Woods and Montpelier. Glenarden Woods correctly answered the last two questions resulting in a final score of Montpelier-170 and Glenarden Woods-235. Thanks to Haris Chaudhry, Katie Godshall, Allison DeMik and Disomi Okie for a fantastic run and to Ms. Clamage.

CAREER DAY

The Montpelier Elementary Career Day was held today, April 4th. The objective for this day was to introduce students to the world of careers. Thank you to the volunteers who visited in our classrooms and shared information about their professions. Special thanks to Dr. Conn for organizing this wonderful event.

BLACK SAGA

The Black Saga competition was held on March 15th at Towson State University where both the regional and state rounds were held on the same day. The team did very well. They scored six points in the regional round. This was two points and one question away from participating in the final round. We want to congratulate the students, Justin McGill, Savyon Stokes and Emy Nwadiaro, for their endurance. The coordinators, Ms. Cuthbertson and Ms. Burgess, would also like to thank all of those who helped facilitate the team’s success.

MIDDLE SCHOOL REGISTRATION for 5th GRADERS

We are in the process of middle school registration. Blue registration forms (PA-14) were mailed along with a letter explaining the need to provide current proof of residency and updated registration information. This is required prior to the student’s advancing to middle school at the end of this school year.

BEHAVIOR INCENTIVE

In March, over 400 students received a special treat of cotton candy spun by Mr. Donnie Phillips of the Hyattsville Family Preservation Services. And, the Behavior Incentive for April will be provided by Papa Johns Pizza. Papa Johns is donating coupons for a personal pizza for each student who is identified as having good character. Congratulations to all!

PERSONALITY PORTRAITS

Strawbridge Studios, Inc. will be coming to Montpelier to take school pictures on Monday, May 5th. If you would like your student to be photographed on May 5th, complete an order form (order forms will be sent home later this month in the Friday Folders), select your photo package, place payment in the provided envelope and return to your child’s teacher. Participating students are not required to wear uniforms and may wear school appropriate clothing on Picture Day.

APRIL IS MATH MONTH

We are very excited here at Montpelier Elementary because April is Math Month. The students have completed wonderful math posters which are on display all over the school. We also will have jars of different items (candy, bouncy balls, Oreo Cookies, small toys, etc.) that the students have to guess the number in the jar. If they are the closest, they win the jar!!! Every morning, the students are learning and reviewing a math vocabulary term and learning about a book or website that teaches about that concept. Also, we will have a problem of the week to solve, and students will demonstrate how to solve it in different ways. Additionally, teachers will be partnering up and their students will be playing math games on April 11th. Please ask your child all about the wonderful math activities we are promoting here at our wonderful school.

Please take a moment to view a sampling of the posters in our lobby showcase. The winners were:
