HEATING, VENTILATION, AIR CONDITIONING AND

REFRIGERATION MECHANIC1

CLASS TITLE:HEATING, VENTILATION, AIR CONDITIONING

AND REFRIGERATION MECHANIC

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor, perform heating, ventilation and air conditioning installation, repair and maintenance work; maintain indoor environment comfortable for staff and students; and perform related work as required.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

1.Inspect, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, adjust and regulate heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment including heat pumps, heating and ventilating units, air conditioning with gas or electric heat, reciprocating chillers, multi-zone units, hot water heating boilers, cooling towers, thermal energy storage systems, pumps, air handlers, return and exhaust fans, air compressors, variable air volume systems, refrigerators, and ice makers. 2.Replace valves, fans, motors, gaskets, filters, belts, refrigerant oil, contactors, fuses, compressors, capacitors, bearings, sheaves, and actuators; use various testing devices to locate defective parts; pump down units with vacuum pump; use welding equipment to repair refrigeration lines; adjust RPM on motors and fans; check and adjust gas pressure on heating units. 3.Adjust and install switches, gauges, thermostats, valves, tubing and other parts as needed; make pipe connections and repairs; troubleshoot and repair electrical components pertaining to heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment. (E)

4.Check and test new equipment before installation; calibrate pneumatic and electrical controls; calibrate, repair and replace thermostats; adjust, balance and redesign air flow through ducts, diffusers, and registers; set time clocks for heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment; maintain chemical water treatment for cooling towers, hot and cold water systems and thermal energy storage systems; operate and adjust building electronic controls for temperature and scheduling control; initiate and implement preventive maintenance system including keeping various logs and records. 6.Make estimates of labor and material costs for jobs; research catalogs to locate materials and parts required for jobs; requisition, receive and store parts and materials; purchase parts and materials on open Purchase Orders; maintain records of time and materials. (E)

7.Assign and check the work of contractors assigned to specific projects; work from blueprints, schematics and rough sketches; plan and lay out work on assigned work orders; make rough sketches and working drawings. (E)

8.Care for and store tools and provide for security of tools, materials and equipment at the work site; assist other maintenance personnel by performing unskilled or semi-skilled duties.

9.Operate the building controls energy management system.(E)

10.Perform building maintenance related tasks as needed.

11.Perform related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

District organization, operations, policies and objectives.

Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) equipment and systems.

Pipe fitting, sheet metal work and electrical work pertaining to HVACR repair.

Applicable codes and regulations.

Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Shop math applicable to the air conditioning trade.

Basic recordkeeping.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

ABILITY TO:

Learn to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures and apply them in a variety of procedural situations.

Use with skill the tools, test equipment and materials of the HVACR repair trade.

Work from diagrams, blueprints, plans, specifications, catalogs and technical manuals.

Maintain tools and equipment used and assigned in clean working order, providing proper security.

Maintain simple records.

Perform shop mathematics.

Operate a truck, observing legal and defensive driving practices.

Lift, carry and push up to 50 pounds.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and disability issues.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education and experience equivalent to an Associate degree and four years of increasingly responsible journey-level HVAC maintenance and repair experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California driver license. EPA-approved Section 608 Type I & II refrigeration certification.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Moderate to heavy physical labor with constant standing and walking for extended periods of time; walking over rough or uneven surfaces; frequent pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying of heavy objects weighing up to 75 pounds; frequent bending, stooping and kneeling; manual dexterity to operate power equipment in a safe manner; operating motorized equipment and vehicles; ability to operate electric cart to travel and/or to pick-up/deliver supplies to a variety of locations on campus; subject to occasional travel to other district locations to work as needed.

EMOTIONAL EFFORT:

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to appropriately respond to a variety of situations and unanticipated stressors; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Indoor and outdoor environments in all weather conditions including rain and heat; exposure to sun for extended periods of time; work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces; work at above ground locations such as ceilings and roofs and in constrained areas, and around high voltage and electrical panels; work while using or wearing personal protective equipment such as respirators, protective gloves, hearing protection, steel toed footwear, face shields, goggles, and rain suits; environmental exposure to dust, fumes, oil/grease, gasoline, diesel fuel, smoke, pollen, and/or hazardous materials; exposure to various noise levels from equipment and vehicle operation; must work with and around extremely dangerous equipment and machinery with moving parts; may be required to work at any district location, day and/or evenings and weekends as needed to conduct District business.
