Workshop Goal: 2-Day TTS Update

The primary goal of this program is to provide supplemental training to professionals previously trained as Tobacco Treatment Specialists. The specific content areas included are those for which new information is likely to available over the past 2 years. This program is being presented in collaboration with the ACT Center at the University of Mississippi. The Tobacco Treatment Specialist training programs at the ACT Center and Center for Tobacco Treatment Research and Training are accredited by the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs, ATTUD (http://attudaccred.org/). While no specific accreditation is currently available for this program, its intention is consistent with the overall goals of our accredited curricula, and the competency standards set forth by the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence (ATTUD; www.attud.org).

Treating Tobacco Dependence

·  Describe the components for a comprehensive approach to tobacco control

·  Describe the intensity levels and modalities of tobacco treatment approaches

Tobacco Products, Usage and Impact

·  Describe the various types of tobacco

·  Cite the primary USA prevalence rates for tobacco use

System, Administrative, and Professional Considerations

·  Name factors to consider when establishing a treatment program

·  Identify common barriers and factors that will facilitate implementation

·  Identify ethical / legal issues relevant to tobacco dependence treatment

·  Describe the professional conventions in providing tobacco treatment services

Assessment Update / Overview

·  Cite key factors to evaluate

·  Describe use of key instruments

Intake Session Review / Exercise

·  Describe the content to be covered during an intake session

·  Demonstrate the capacity to deliver this material

Pharmacotherapy I: Basic Concepts

·  Identify the types of medications used in tobacco treatment

·  Describe usual usage

Pharmacotherapy II: Advanced Considerations

·  Describe emerging trends in pharmacologic treatment

·  Cite the various forms of harm reduction

Pharmacotherapy Case Presentations

·  Assist in the development of a pharmacologic treatment plan

Treatment Program Evaluation: Evaluating the Effects of Interventions

·  Cite the reasons for conducting routine program evaluations

·  Describe the advantages and disadvantages
