HCC Diagnostic Medical Sonography

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the diagnostic medical sonography program is to provide students with an academic and clinical environment conducive to learning the skills necessary to gain advanced certification in ultrasound imaging. The program is committed to the highest standards of academic, personal and professional potential through quality courses and instructions to enable diagnostic medical sonography graduates to become an effective member of the health care team.

GOALS

The goals of the diagnostic medical sonography program are to prepare competent entry-level general sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

STUDENT GOALS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Students will be clinically competent and develop the ability to function as a diagnostic medical sonographer.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will pass the ARDMS SPI Physics Registry Exam by the end of the summer semester
  • Students will demonstrate competency and safe practice of all general sonographic procedures.

2. Students will use critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will demonstrate competency and safe practice of all general sonographic procedures
  • Students will employ technology to solve problems and make informed decisions to create high quality images for interpretation
  • Students will demonstrate safe and proper use of all equipment
  • Students will assess patient condition prior to and during sonography exam, and make necessary adjustments to exam protocols for patient condition, body habitus, and pathology
  • Students will be able to perform well under pressure
  • Students will be able to meet employer’s expectations

3. Students will communicate effectively in written, verbal, and non-verbal communication.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will demonstrate written communication skills in OB/GYN Research Papers
  • Students will demonstrate written communication skills in case study reports
  • Students will demonstrate oral communication skills in case study presentations
  • Students will be able to listen to clinical instructor comments and make corrections as advised
  • Students will be able to explain sonography procedure and/or instructions to patient prior to and during sonography exam

4. Students will exhibit professionalism.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Students Will be able to collaborate and interact effectively with peers, instructors, and patients
  • Students will independently use technology to create high quality images appropriate for interpretation
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge relating to quality assurance
