1.  Play recording of song. While showing the picture book. Listen and Look

2.  Tell story of how Louis Armstrong got his first instrument

3.  Show how picture book relates to the story. Make connections.

4.  Listen and look at the book again, responding to various parts that correspond to books.

5.  5. Read author’s note in front of “If I Only Had A Horn” noting that multiple stories exist of how L.A. acquired his first instrument.

6.  Read Book “If I Only Had a Horn”. Compare stories of his life. What is similar from original story, what is different. Discuss why they think one is more or less valid.

7.  Listen again to recording.
