Our contact number is 01382 668300.

No uniforms are worn at this time, but obviously neat appearance is necessary.

The working hours for students are 9am – 4.30pm – Monday to Friday.

We hope you will enjoy your placement with us and increase your knowledge of working with our client group.

PHILOSOPHY

We aim to provide a unique service 5 days a week to individuals with learning difficulties. Therapists from different disciplines are involved in the care of these people where appropriate. We strive, after assessment of need, to provide input using a holistic approach, which we hope to prove therapeutic to these individuals.

In doing so, we consider relevant, the fact that it is correct to provide the chance for growth and experience in areas of daily living. We recognise that it may not always be possible to explore all areas, which may maximise potential, but we feel it is ethically correct to try to the best of our abilities and skills.

We would also consider it important to provide student nurses with the opportunity to experience caring for people with learning disabilities and behaviours, which are considered by society to be challenging, thus hopefully providing a deeper understanding of the problems our clients encounter in their daily living activities and maximise opportunities to meet their learning outcomes in a supportive environment.

In accordance with the nursing and midwifery code of professional conduct, we as professional nurses, endeavour to continually update and extend our knowledge. This will enable us to acquire new skills to contribute to the implementation of research based nursing practice and the provision of an area conductive to learning for pre-registration students.

Hawkhill aims to cater for adults with a learning disability over the age of 18 with predominantly severe or profound learning disabilities and challenging behaviour whose needs cannot be met elsewhere. Hawkhill covers Dundee, as well as Angus, although, due to transport issues, there are major difficulties to serve Angus.

We are open 5 days a week all year except Public Holidays. Admission criterion is a short-term admission with a specific target, however, due to the lack of facilities in the community, long-term admissions are frequently unavoidable though undesired for the individual.

What service do we provide?

Detailed assessment and/or treatment of psychiatric disorders and behaviour disturbances with emphasis on consideration of all the individuals needs.

Multidisciplinary and named specialist nurse approach to individualise all assessment e.g. functional assessments etc, interventions e.g. behavioural strategies and evaluation of treatments.
