About the Fit to Drive Foundation
Our purpose:
To reduce negative community impacts as the result of serious injuries and fatalities, particularly amongst young people (aged 16-25), on Victorian roads.”
Our mission:
“To engage with young people to deliver road safety messages that will empower and support young road users (aged 16-25) to achieve Zero deaths on Victorian Roads.”
------
The Fit to Drive Foundation is a not for profit organisation dedicated to reducing road trauma in young people aged 16 to 25. Our focus is on building the capacity of young people to make good decisions when faced with risky situations on our roads, whether as a passenger or a driver. The Foundation is about building positive attitudes and behaviours - not teaching driving skills.
The philosophy of the Fit to Drive Foundation incorporates the belief that young people have the capacity to change and influence attitudes and behaviours in relation to risky road use, and supports them to take ownership and responsibility for their own and their peers' safety.
The Fit to Drive Foundation is an incorporated association, with existing partnerships with Transport Accident Commission (TAC), VicRoads, Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) and Local Governments. Schools, the Arthur Seat Challenge and other community sponsorships support the delivery of road safety messages.
The Fit to Drive Foundation is proud to deliver F2D Year 11 Workshops(F2D)on behalf of VicRoads, one of the suite of three government endorsed VicRoads secondary school programs:
  • Year 10- Road Smart
  • Year 11- F2D
  • Year 12- Looking After Your Mates
The F2D Year 11 Workshops are based on research, evidence and best practice principles in the areas of behavior change, peer facilitation, education, engagement with young people and appropriate road safety messages for the target audience. Since the launch of the current program in 2014 F2D Year 11 Workshops have been delivered across Victoria to over 85,000 Year 11 students (December 2017).
Delivered by university students who have undertaken a VicRoads training program, F2D provides a peer facilitation model encouraging engagement and participation in a half day workshop.
A key point of difference of the F2D program is the focus on the behavior and responsibilities of all road users. F2D workshops do not utilise any scare tactics or driving instruction, and the development of a personal safety plan encourages young people to consider how they will travel at all times and in particular, what they will do if they faced with a risky situation or are feeling unsafe.
The program utilises the expertise of VicRoads and trained staff from various emergency service providers including Victoria Police, MFB, CFA and SES.
In addition, the Fit to Drive Foundation is proud to deliver the following programs on behalf of the TAC:
Student Voices Road Safety Forum
  • Up to six schools from within the same community come together to further develop their community plan and present it to community leaders and decision makers.
  • This is an optional extension to the F2D Year 11 Workshop.
  • Participants focus on the development of a community plan in line with specific criteria (to limit the scope), which they present to a broader panel of community leaders
Smarter Moves Community Road Safety Forum
  • This free, two-hour community road safety forum is an opportunity to facilitate open communication between parents/carers and students (aged 15 to 24).
  • The forum provides parents/carers, or other significant adults in the young person’s life, with resources, information and strategies that emphasisetheir role in supporting their child’s road safety plan.
LegitiMATE
  • This program develops safer driving and travel behaviours for young offenders (aged 15 to 18) who are under community-supervised orders.
  • The program aims to explore triggers for risky or illegal behaviours so participants are more aware of their own reactions and can work on developing more positive road safety behaviours.
  • The three interactive sessions feature role-playing, storytelling and games, with a focus on developing a personal plan and practicing refusal skills.
  • The program facilitators have youth work experience and youth support staff from Youth Justice also attend.
  • The program was developed by experts in road safety, forensic psychology, adult education and youth justice. As a result, LegitiMATE is an evidence-based road safety program that adopts an educational, behaviour change approach.
  • LegitiMATE focuses on developing strategies that can be drawn on to deal with a range of risky driving situations, including the young person’s role as passenger, and encourages a commitment to ongoing self-monitoring, reflection and refining of their personal safety plan.
