Service Learning Guidelines

Service Learning meets a portion of the requirement for West Virginia students to complete Work-Based Learning during the ninth to twelfth grade years.

Students must complete the appropriate form seeking pre-approval from his/her advisor before performing the service. Service preformed without approval will not be approved.

Students should complete at least ten hours of service each year beginning with the ninth grade year. Forty hours of service are required for graduation.

Students may perform service on the school campus or in the community.

Students may perform either direct service (working with individuals) or indirect service (making posters, preparing materials, etc.).

The Service Learning Record becomes one component of the student’s career portfolio. Service Learning related to the student’s chosen career cluster is highly recommended.

Students must complete the reflection portion of the service activity form. This educational activity provides students with an opportunity to relate Service Learning to the world of work.

Students may not use an activity that involves pay for service or directly benefits the student’s family (chopping wood for grandparent, etc.)

Appeals of Service Learning credit may be made to the school Service Learning Committee consisting of the Principal or designee, counselor and students advisor.

The School Level Service Learning Committee shall remain constant for one year periods.
