Hananiah, Mishaeland Azariah Godliness in action Standing for God in the Face of Adversity

  1. INTRODUCTION:
  1. Daniel 1:1 …Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the articles of the house of God, which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god;... 6 Now from among those of the sons of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. 7 To them the chief of the eunuchs gave names: he gave Daniel the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abed-Nego. 8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank;...12 "Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. …Then the king interviewed them, and among them all none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; therefore they served before the king. 20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding about which the king examined them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers who were in all his realm.
  2. 3 years of training, 3 years of vegetables and water, and 3 years of intense education
  3. …all to serve the King that destroyed their lives and their people. Slavery & Humiliation
  4. Where are their parents or families?
  5. The King did not honor Jehovah God - The King wanted people that would serve him
  1. Daniel tells the king’s dream and interprets it
  1. Daniel 2:46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face, prostrate before Daniel, …and said, "Truly your God is the God of gods, the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, since you could reveal this secret." …49 Also Daniel petitioned the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego over the affairs of the province of Babylon;

  1. The king honors God
  2. Huge promotions for Daniel
  3. …Envy in some of the others?
  4. Daniel remembers his friends

  1. Sitting in the gate of the king – he’s still “got the king’s ear”
  1. The King’s Golden Image
  1. Daniel 3:1 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits and its width six cubits. …4 Then a herald cried aloud: "To you it is commanded, …5 that at the time you hear the sound of the … music, you shall fall down and worship the gold image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up; 6 and whoever does not …shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace." 7 So at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the …music, all the people,…fell down and worshiped the gold image…

  1. 90’ high x 9’ wide – of GOLD
  2. All the “important folks” gathered
  3. Instructions were clear – WORSHIP!
  4. Can you quickly “think on your feet?”
  5. Obey or die a horrible death…NOW!
  6. Everyone decided to comply

  1. Civil Disobedience & Refusing to Comply
  1. Daniel 3:8 …certain Chaldeans came forward and accused the Jews. …13 Then Nebuchadnezzar, in rage and fury, gave the command to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. …who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?" 16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If that is the case, our God Whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up."

  1. Tattlers make it all their business.
  2. If you look worse, then I look better?
  3. King’s fury – not willing to hear them
  4. King had defeated God’s people, but…
  5. Their allegiance to God never waivered
  6. Whether God delivers us or not,…

  1. The Fiery Furnace
  1. Daniel 3:19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. He spoke and commanded that they heat the furnace seven times more than it was usually heated. 20 And he commanded certain mighty men of valor who were in his army to bind (them) and cast them into the burning fiery furnace. …the flame of the fire killed those men …23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. 24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste …, "Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?“ …25 "Look!" he answered, "I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God."

  1. King full of fury. Facial expressions.
  2. Extreme heat.
  3. Specific mighty men of valor.
  4. Mighty men died OUTSIDE the furnace.
  5. Our men fell down IN the fire.
  6. What makes the King stand up and take notice?

  1. Seeing the Son of God…as He’s with people you just sentenced to death for their religious heresy.
  1. Nebuchadnezzar Glorifies God
  1. Daniel 3:27 …and they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power; …28 Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying, "Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, Who sent His Angel and delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and they have frustrated the king's word, and yielded their bodies, that they should not serve nor worship any god except their own God! 29 Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation, or language which speaks anything amiss against the God …shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made an ash heap; because there is no other God who can deliver like this."
  2. Public, everyone saw it, especially the officials, and the king showed his awe by his law.
  3. While fire is a great destroyer, the extreme heat had NO effect on them.
  4. The King impressed by their total devotion. No partial commitment. Promotion is closest antithesis to death?

  1. The golden nuggets from Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah:
  1. God’s remnant was defeated & Temple plundered; Judah had left God, so God brought Babylon against them.
  2. While God used Nebuchadnezzar, the king was not faithful to God.
  3. Survivors must learn the language & serve the heathen king who didn’t care about their religion or social morés.
  4. They knew God was in control. The king didn’t make their lives bad – the rebellious Jews did!
  5. When we face dire consequences, does it measure up to the fiery furnace?
  6. Satan gets people’s souls for a fist full of dollars (or less) more often than for millions. Is ANY of it worth it?
  7. While we should fear fire, it is not the king’s furnace that really matters.
  8. How quickly they responded with confidence & tenacity! Proud parents?
  9. No second-guessing or crying for mercy – “rise, let us be going…”
