April 2, 2012 / Training news from the Western Sport pilot association llc

This is an occasional bulletin distributed to current and prospective students and instructor affiliates of the Western Sport Pilot Association. If you would like to be removed from the distribution list email Doug at and request to unsubscribe from the WSPA MONTHLY TRAINING BULLETIN

The last WSPA training bulletin that we published was in January. That is about the time the Pacific Northwest Monsoon hit. And it appears to continue to linger. So there just hasn't been much reason to publish a bulletin in February and March because there hasn't been much if any flying or training occurring. But with EAA UL Chapter 127 events nearing and students stacking up waiting for training we are publishing the April bulletin in hopes that the season will begin soon!

If you have not yet received our 2012 Training Catalogue, take a minute to fill out the request form 2012 TRAINING CATALOGUE and we will email you our full color .pdf version. If you are not in to internet files and would prefer printed information and other products go to our RESOURCES page and choose another option.

TRAINING CENTER UPDATES

These are updates from some of our training affiliates. Refer to the 2012 WSPA Training Catalogue for full listing of instructors and training locations.

Oregon

We are pleased to announce the addition of a new fixed wing instructor affiliate. Wolf Edmonds who operates out of Portland, Hillsboro and Sandy Oregon came on board with WSPA in January. This is a very good thing, not just for the addition of another instructor, but also that we now have another ultralight and light sport instructor in our network.

Rick Gutierrez and Mark Martin operating out of Arlington, Washington have quite a list of students waiting for attention. Rick's SLSA is down for repair for a few weeks, but he should be in full swing by the end of April. Rick also has possession of our single seat ppc Special Light Sport that he is using for solo training. So with Rick you do not need to own your own aircraft to begin training.

Mike Lersbak, CFI and Examiner, Powered Parachutes, recently sold his SLSA certified powered parachute. Thus he is without wings for awhile. Mike is still available to provide training in your ELSA certified powered parachute, if it is equipped with dual controls. Mike will also be on hand at the Memorial Day rally in Quincy, Washington to conduct practical tests, flight reviews and ongoing training.

Doug Maas, CFI, Examiner and Instructor Examiner for powered parachutes just sold his SLSA too. The timing of selling one of the few SLSAs available in this area just never seems to work out very well. Just as the season begins this means that Doug is without wings too for awhile. We hope to have a new SLSA in Portland-Vancouver by June. Meanwhile Doug remains available for training in your own ELSA certified powered parachute.

Memorial Day Opener Looms
This will be the 22nd Annual Memorial Day event, now called the Wayne Custer Memorial Day Rally. We will be at Twin Firs Turf Farm again this year (3rd year??), but likely with some changes from last year. We fly here as guests of Kent and Kim Bacon, but need to flex depending on what he has planted and the availability of the fields. We have a lot of details to work out as always, but we hope that you will calendar this one early. Rick Gutierrez, Seattle Powerchutes is putting together a golf tournament for Friday. We will have a full schedule of other activities that will keep us consumed with flying and fun from sun up to down…well and then some.
This is the season opener and for those who have attended for years you know there is a little more structure, classes and other activities that are designed to help us have a very safe flying season. We will have flight examiners and instructors on site so this is also the perfect event and time for flight reviews and even scheduling our practical tests.
For those who have not attended, well just take a look at the photo of the facility to get an idea of how awesome this event will be. We have so many new members so this will be a great opportunity to meet everyone.
Keep your eye on the club forum and also on the Western Sport Pilot Association Website for ongoing information on this event and others. Contact with questions.

TRAINING ROSTER

The following rosters shows our latest data of students, assigned instructors, and current course or training status. If you are a currently enrolled student, please stay in contact with your assigned CFI to schedule time and update information. This month's roster includes dozens of folks who have been in contact with us over the past year through training inquiries, events or other means. These prospective students are listed under "Prospective Students". If you no longer have an interest in a discovery flight, or initiating training and no longer want to be carried on the roster and receive these bulletins, email me and we will delete you immediately.

Prospective students are encouraged to look at the calendar and fill out the Training Interest Form mentioned above. Training Interest Survey The information that we gain from this survey will allow us to connect you with the nearest instructor and most appropriate class and location to meet your request.

The Rally Checklist
Many who receive this training bulletin are new to the sport and perhaps not even members yet of the regional EAA Chapter 127. You do not need to be a member of the club, or even flying yet to attend their events. And there is actually no better place to get a discovery flight, meet other pilots and families and gain a lot of information about the sport, than at one of the club rallies. We therefore offer this checklist to help you evaluate which events to attend.
Not all our flight rallies and flying events are the same. They are held in various locations, have various levels of support and structure and a variety of activities. Use the checklist on the following pages as a way to review and prepare for the ones most suited to your type of flying and activity preferences.

Attending Club Rallies- -Checklist

  • Why PlanAhead to Attend for Rallies?
  • The club schedule is packed with many opportunities so choose the rallies that are “right” for you.
  • Waste of time and money to show up to one not prepared
  • Different than flying alone and therefore some safety issues to be prepared for
  • Purpose of this outline is to help you plan ahead to maximize your enjoyment at these rallies
  • Focus is on Pacific Northwest rally schedule, but the content of presentation is relevant for everyone
  • Preliminary Issues
  • Understanding the type of events (Club Rallies vary from no structure to a lot of structure, and from no planned activities to a variety. Choose the right kind of rally that fits your needs). Read about the event ahead of time to know how it is organized and the requirements.
  • “no rules” show up and fly type
  • “Rallies” which are informal, yet require that you be legal
  • “air shows” which are more crowded and structured, yet great opportunities to fly
  • “competitions” whether for fun or serious imply more structure and control
  • “get together and fly with others”, impromptu.
  • Make sure your membership, your pilot requirements and your aircraft requirements are current and fully legal. We do not want you to spend time and money to drive to an event only to find out that you can fly at it because you overlooked something on this list:
  • EAA Chapter
  • Annual membership fee paid
  • Membership to EAA current
  • Not mandatory, but only EAA members are covered by the EAA event insurance while attending chapter events
  • Pilot Currency
  • Part 103 Legal Pilots Have no currency requirement
  • Student Pilots
  • Must have instructor endorsement that is current and valid (each 90 days and no limitations that prevent flying at event and event location)
  • Sport Pilots
  • Current Flight Review
  • Every 24 Calendar Months
  • 3 Three Full Stop Takeoffs and Landings to Full Stop within 90 day period to carry passengers
  • Aircraft
  • Part 103 Aircraft Must Be Legal (No more than 5 gallon fuel capacity and maximum dry weight of 254 lbs.)
  • Light Sport Aircraft
  • All Documentation Current
  • Airworthiness Certificate
  • Registration
  • Operating Limitations
  • Weight and Balance
  • Current Annual Inspection of Condition
  • Attending the Event
  • Check the Schedule and be timely
  • Choose events and activities that will suit your tastes and needs
  • Airport vs. rural
  • Structure, control and assistance vs. none
  • Training opportunities vs. you are on your own
  • Pets or not?
  • Facilities or not?
  • “Wading In”
  • Don’t be late for registration
  • Don’t be late for briefings
  • Don’t be late for classes
  • Get registered and ask questions
  • Attend briefing or connect with somebody who has flown the event and area and get briefed
  • Don’t rush things!!
  • Safety Considerations
  • The “risk” environment of rallies
  • Not like flying alone
  • Flying in “crowds” (on the ground and in the air)
  • Flying areas you may be unfamiliar with
  • Flying in conditions that you may not have experienced before
  • Have a plan
  • Don’t let the event “take you over”.
