Conferment of the Title of University Research Lecturer

Mathematical, Physical & Life Sciences Division Guidelines

1. Eligibility

Both research workers employed by outside bodies, and research support staff employed by the University (however funded) are eligible.

2. Criteria for conferment

§  The individual must have substantial research achievements and have an academic standing commensurate with that expected of an associate professor in the department or faculty concerned.

§  The individual will have demonstrated a sustained and continuing contribution to the general academic work of the department.

§  The individual normally will have been working in the department for at least 3 years before the title can be conferred.

§  Contributions to teaching can be limited, bearing in mind other duties performed, and the title can be confirmed primarily in recognition of contribution to research. Teaching can include undergraduate teaching and/or graduate supervision.

§  The conferment of the title has no implications for the level of resources provided by departments to successful nominees.

The conferment of the title will be confined to use in exceptional cases and strictly in accordance with the criteria set out above.

3. Consideration of nominations

As a minimum nominations should comprise, in addition to a curriculum vitae, a description of the research undertaken; full details of any teaching undertaken; two references (one of which should be from an individual from outside the University); and the name of an additional external person (not suggested by the nominee) to whom reference might be made by the Board if it felt that additional information was required. The full dossier should be sent to the Divisional Secretary.

4. Relation to the stipend of those on whom the title is conferred

The stipend of the nominee is no longer a factor in the consideration of whether the title should be conferred but once the title is conferred on a member of university staff it is expected that attempts will be made by the relevant department to ensure that the individual stipend becomes at least equal to that of an associate professor of the same experience.

5. Formalities

Those who are successfully nominated will be sent letters conferring the title for as long as they continue to hold their current post (or a similar one), and a notice about the conferment will be placed in the Gazette.
