Guidance to Teacher

A lesson by lesson guide to the unit of work:

LESSON 1
PPT 1 Introduce the unit’s final outcome which is to produce an evaluative report based on the changing representation of Charlotte Church (slide #1).
Slide #2 presents the learning outcomes for the unit. Share these with the students to inform them of the expectations.
ACTIV STUDIO FLIPCHART 1 The sorting activity uses Activ Studio tools. Students simply drag and drop the text boxes to link the key terms to the key question. This is a ‘way in’ to gaining insight of students’ knowledge and understanding of the key media concepts.
PPT 2 Use this to encourage students to form ideas on the issue of representation. The interactive whiteboard could be used to label the images with either stereotypical terms; eg, ‘harpy’, ‘girl next door’, etc, or less able students may use key adjectives, eg, ‘casual’, ‘confident’, ‘relaxed’, etc.
Homework: using the internet, magazines, etc, create a montage of the changing images of Charlotte Church.
LESSON 2
Book the computer room in order for students to carry out background research on the artist Charlotte Church. They can use a search engine to find out biographical information.
Less able students may need prompt questions for guidance. (Use ACTIV STUDIO FLIPCHART 2)
The issue of organisations should be explored, especially the role of Maria Church as management. Discuss the pros and cons of this close relationship in terms of Charlotte’s marketing and promotion.
Outcomes: A fact sheet on Charlotte Church. More able students may be able to download and import images. Less able should show basic word processing skills. Consider the use of Microsoft publisher for a template.
LESSON 3
Analysis of a tabloid newspaper report PPT3
Students to use the 5ws to deconstruct the report.
Use Active Studio tools to label techniques and/or to highlight who, what, when, where, why?
They can check whether they are correct by clicking on the Who, What, When, Where, Why buttons at the top of the page. (Note this PowerPoint works with the 2003 version using Triggers. If you have an older version you will need to download a patch first at http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/officeupdate/CD010225531033.aspx
More able students could go on to discuss headline technique, what the choice of story reveals about the newspaper’s ideology and also the paper’s view of women.
LESSON 4
Pre-production Task 1: Planning an advertising campaign. PPT4
Use PPT4 to analyse a print based crisp advertisement. Pupils should be asked to identify and discuss the following:
·  brand name/ logo
·  slogan
·  persuasive devices
·  factual information
·  selling points
·  celebrity endorsement/ characters used in ad
·  main images
These can then be checked by clicking on the ‘check’ button. To remove the answer click the ‘check’ button again.
Click anywhere on the screen to advance to the follow on activity. The student’s is to create a print-based advertisement for a crisp-based snack.
Considering:
·  The competition
·  Product name
·  Target audience
·  Celebrity endorsement
·  Where the advertisement will be displayed.
LESSON 5
Design a full-page advert paying particular attention to presentational devices and construction processes.
Students with more developed ICT skills could consider use of Publisher, Photoshop or Quark.
Teacher to model. Alternatively, design can be made by hand.
Homework: write an evaluation explaining your ideas.
LESSONS 6/7
Teachers should feel free to use more lessons on advertising if required.
Additional activities could be on the planning of a television advert. PPT5 Consider scheduling, storyboarding, scripting, etc as desired.
Ask students to bring old magazines and clothing catalogues to next lesson.
LESSON 8
Pre-production Task 2: Create the image for a new music artist or group.
Use PPT6 to introduce tasks.
The following lessons will focus on artist representation.
Students should be reminded that as well as images of people, they may use pictures of jewellery, items of clothing, colours, etc in their montages.
LESSON 9
Use slides 3 & 4 PPT6 as a template to guide students as they work on representation.
More able students should be able to provide explanations for their decisions.
Ask students to bring a selection of CD covers to next lesson.
LESSON 10
Students to work in small groups to analyse their chosen CD covers.
PPT7 can be used to analyse CD covers as a whole class. Teacher to highlight the key construction processes involved in the production of CD covers.
Use Whiteboard tools to allow representatives from each to group to label the blank CD template PPT7 Screens 4- 6 with the key elements ( artist’s name, album title, images, colour, font size and style, catalogue no. etc).
Students could prepare a presentation outlining which CD they found most appealing to the target audience.
LESSON 11
Students to design a CD cover for the artist or group they created in lesson 8.
LESSONS 12/13/14
Teachers should feel free to spend more time on creating the image of a new artist or group.
Possible activities might include:
·  Writing a press release
·  Designing a poster
·  A mock-up of a print-based interview
·  Designing a web page.
LESSON 15
Pre-production Task 3: Produce a treatment for your artist’s new music video.
PPT8 Students should listen to the music provided in the PowerPoint as stimulus, paying particular attention to lyrics, chord changes etc to prompt ideas.
They should write a seventy-word synopsis outlining the video’s content.
Teachers may model the storyboarding processes using Whiteboard software tools then photocopy template for students if desired.
The music provided is an example. Teachers may wish to change the track used for one of the others stored within ‘extra resources’ or substitute for their own choice of music.
LESSON 16
Students to work on storyboard.
LESSON 17
PPT9.
Students should watch the Sterephonics music video Dakota. Then using the prompts should analyse the video.
Teachers can model how to do this using Whiteboard software.
Homework: students to use knowledge and understanding to analyse a music video on television.

LESSON 18

Analysis of ‘Just Wave Hello’ by Charlotte Church.
Repeated viewing of music video within Powerpoint presentation Students to complete analysis chart at end of teachers notes.
LESSON 19
PPT11
Analysis of ‘Crazy Chick’ performance. Again, repeated viewing is required. This is an internet link to the video. You must be connected to the internet to view. The link will open a Web Page. Scroll down and click on the ‘High’ or ‘low’ button next to the Windows icon. The video will then run in a window. Double click the image to make it full screen.
You can also download the video by right clicking the ‘High’ button next to the Windows icon and selecting “Save Target As”
Then you can alter the link to the video from within PPT as follows:
·  Right click on the picture of Charlotte Church
·  Select “Edit Hyperlink” from the drop down menu
·  Click the arrow next to the top white tool bar and navigate to where you have saved the video file.
·  The video will run without a connection to the internet.
LESSON 20
Students should now be able to embark upon their Textual Analysis coursework.
They should use to the two charts to write a comparative evaluative report in line the examining board’s requirements.
Charts can be brought up on the IWB and discussed with students. PPT12
