CLASS TITLE:RADIO-TELEVISION ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

This is technical work operating and maintaining studio and transmitter broadcast equipment in an open or closed circuit plant.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Installs, repairs and maintains mechanical and electronic equipment.
  • Checks communications/electronic equipment.
  • Performs maintenance and repair of state-of-the-art electronic equipment.
  • Sets up video tape and associated equipment for the assembly of programs.
  • Assists in the testing, design and fabrication of highly technical electronic devices.
  • Reviews and edits off-air recordings for air suitability.
  • Operates and maintains studio, broadcasting, signal recording and processing equipment in audio and/or video as applicable.
  • Maintains records.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques for maintaining, designing, operating and/or constructing technical broadcasting equipment.
  • Knowledge of radio and/or television systems and subsystems.
  • Knowledge of engineering quantitative techniques.
  • Skill in using repair tools and equipment.
  • Skill in operating audio/video tape editing equipment.
  • Skill in operating a wide variety of audio/video tape recording/reproducing equipment, master control switchers, routing switchers, vidifonts and/or ancillary production and control equipment.
  • Ability to maintain, design, operate, and/or construct technical broadcast equipment.
  • Ability to perform post-production editing and program assembly.
  • Ability to maintain logs and records.
  • Ability to apply engineering quantitative techniques.
  • Ability to solve problems relating to engineering.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent and two years of experience in the maintenance, design, operation or construction of technical broadcasting equipment.
  • Vocational/technical training in communications engineering, broadcast station engineering or electronics can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours for each year of the required experience.
  • College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for each year of the required experience provided such education includes four courses in mathematics, electronics or engineering.
