GROUP VIDEO PROJECT

Create a mini-news cast! With your group, you are going to create a news report.

Roles: Anchor: main news presenter; introduces stories and field reporters

Field reporters: (2-3) report news stories in a location on campus; can

interview people or group members , or acts out skit

Videographer (Camera:) in charge of all filming and set or location

arrangements; should be comfortable with

technology and using a video camera

Guidelines for roles:

Anchor – introduces main stories, provides background information and asks field reporters questions; helps write scripts, contributes ideas

Field Reporters – Can interview teammates or other outside participants or act or role play about events or things happening around campus; responsible for writing scripts and memorizing them but please try to be as natural as possible!

Videographer – films and checks quality of segments (make sure you delete files automatically that you are not intending to keep!!! IMPORTANT -otherwise there will be too many files and you will take forever to put them all together!) Makes sure locations are suitable and is responsible for directing group members positions etc.; Helps write scripts, contributes ideas.

Theme: Campus Life

Your news channel is doing a specific segment on the issues around campus life. You can choose from any of the following topics:

  • transportation/bus/ parking issues
  • exams (standardized vs. portfolio, assessment)
  • tuition fees
  • safety on campus
  • text book costs and use
  • course selection
  • time management
  • balance of social life and student life
  • financial issues, part-time work and study life
  • cultural diversity on campus, integration or lack of integration

Choose 2 or 3 topics.

Research and prepare skits and/or interviews about each one. You can interview real students if you want! I encourage you to get out there and have fun with it and practice your English! (If you use real people, make sure they agree to being filmed first.)

The Anchor should provide some statistics or specific information and a summary of each story(1-2 minutes). He/she should then turn to the field reporter, who then interviews or gives more information about the topic (repeat this with each group member). The Anchor should then comment on the first field reporter’s story and then introduce the next story. (Each field reporter story should 5-10 minutes each depending on interview or skit length and participants). Videographers should manage files, deleting ones that are not wanted. For each segment, have only one file (please make sure they run through the entire segment without stopping so it will only be one file for each segment). Don’t worry if it’s not 100% perfect.

Example: Anchor – introduces top news story, summarizes briefly (one file)

Field reporter – says hello, reintroduces story and starts interview or skit (one file)

Anchor – comments and summarizes story 1, introduces story 2 (one file)

Field reporter – says hello, reintroduces story and starts interview or skit (one file)

Anchor - comments and summarizes story 2, concludes news show (one file)

(Repeat for story 3 if group of 5)

Overall, with each clip of film, it should not be more than 20 minutes long.

You can be creative and make up stories too, or borrow ideas from old stories. Use the internet to find out information. Please feel free to ask me questions as we go! 

The group mark will be based on:

  • Timing /5 (Did everyone do their part to manage the timing of each segment and completion of the project?) Everyone should help edit and add information
  • Coherence of segments /5 (Did the video pieces flow well together and make sense? Did the anchor introduce and comment/conclude each segment?)
  • Content (facts, statistics, background info, interview or skit content) /10
  • Delivery (was it like a news report? Did it engage the audience?) /5

A separate peer mark will be given for each individual and mark from me, your teacher, on your language use. Each person will give his/her team members a mark after the project has been completed.
