ADM Gary Barclay Chief of Public Affairs

Greetings and felicitations,

August is here and the year just seems to be flying by. Soon the leaves will be flying too. There are so many events going on. It was good to see so many people at the Starbase 06 Olympics and I am sure that Dana Dougan would be proud to it being so successful.

Happenings in the Fleet

USS Mighty Mississippi celebrated their 2nd anniversary
by Ensign Katie Haugen

On Saturday, July 20th, the USS Mighty Mississippi celebrated their 2nd anniversary. The crew spent a fun and relaxing evening on the Celebration Belle “Captain’s dinner & dance cruise” on the Mississippi River. In attendance were Rose Compton, Ed Ciccarone, Alex & Katie Haugen, Les Pullman and Tony Steckman from USS Mighty Mississippi and Alan & Heidee Thompson from Thompson Ship Yard.

The night started with boarding at 6:30pm. A buffet dinner was served for the crew shortly afterward. A social time and dancing followed the dinner until docking at 9pm. During the social time the crew had a short meeting where we discussed our plans for the Festival of Trees for this holiday season. Captain Rose was to turn in the application by the end of the month for our participation in this community project for the 4th quarter.

The ships next meeting is scheduled for August 24th at 3pm at the Davenport Public Library – Eastern Avenue Branch.

Creation Con – Chicago
by Lt. Ed Ciccarone

On May 31 through June 2, I had the great pleasure of attending the Creation Entertainment Star Trek Convention in Chicago, Illinois. This was the first time I’d ever been to a Creation Con event, and I was thoroughly impressed with the collection of stars that were there. This extravaganza included the entire TNG cast (except for Will Wheaton), a good portion of the DS9 cast, and Ethan Phillips.

Along with my fiancée, Rose Compton, I had the opportunity to meet and get autographs from Nana Visitor, Ethan Phillips, Aron Eisenberg, Casey Biggs, Jeffrey Combs, and Vaughn Armstrong. We also got our pictures taken with Sir Patrick Stewart and Nana Visitor. Additionally, there was a “ladies of Next Gen” photo op with Gates McFadden and Marina Sirtis, and I certainly wasn’t going to miss out on that.

We saw almost all of the stars speak on stage, and they were all very interesting and entertaining. I also learned a lot about all of them that I probably would never have known. Aside from their acting abilities, it turns out that many of the TNG and DS9 cast are accomplished singers, instrumentalists, dancers, or writers. I also learned that the stars that I’ve enjoyed watching on stage and screen are nice people. Everyone that I met and talked to was genuinely pleasant and personable.

In addition to the stars, there were plenty of Starfleet Command members at the convention. In attendance were: Me, Rose Compton and Les Pullman III, James Olson, Nancy Bailey, Mark Williams, Gary Barclay, Roy Jackson, Cyndi Jackson, and two of Starfleet’s newest members, Lee Starshine and Mini Singh. I had a great time hanging out with all of my friends from Starfleet, and I’m confident that it is safe to say a good time was had by all. I can’t wait for the next con!

Trekfest 2013
by Cmdr. Rose Compton

Every year, during the last weekend of June; the small town of Riverside Iowa comes together to celebrate the future birth of James Tiberius Kirk. It is located in rural Washington County, Iowa, along the English River on Iowa Highway 22, and has a population of 993 (at the 2010 census.)

Riverside proclaimed itself the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk, a character from the television series Star Trek, with an agreement from Gene Roddenberry, the series creator. Trek fest offers a splendid flavor of what a small town festival should be, from a family point of view or from a fans point of view.

From 5:00 pm on Friday to 10:00 pm on Saturday, the locals and the tourists can enjoy food booths, beer gardens, a demolition derby or sky watching with amateur Astronomers. For the children there are carnival rides, a bouncy house, a Kid’s parade, face painting and a tractor pull. For those athletes among us, there is also a volleyball tournament and a kickball tournament. Add to this with a Trek themed parade, a costume contest, a Trek Trivia contest, a swap-meet, federation games, a videothon, and several bands, playing throughout the weekend and you have a grand small town festival.

Several Starfleet Command members converged on the little town of Riverside Iowa on June 28th & 29th.
