COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is a continuation of MTL 212 and will concentrate on the out of position welding. The course will also cover other cutting processes, joint designs, welding symbols and weld testing and inspections.

COURSE GOALS:

CLASSROOM:

1.  Identify the five basic weld joints.

2.  Identify the types of welds that can be made on each joint.

3.  Identify the parts of a fillet weld.

4.  Identify the parts of a groove weld.

5.  List four welding positions.

6.  Identify the proper protective clothing to be used when welding out of position.

7.  Describe the procedure for welding uphill and downhill in the vertical position.

8.  Identify weld defects and demonstrate procedures for avoiding the defects.

9.  Identify the basic types of welds indicated on the AWS welding symbol.

10.  Describe the difference between a welding flaw and a welding defect.

11.  List the most common types of nondestructive and destructive testing done on welds.

12.  List reasons for surfacing a part.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

The student must pass the safety test with 100% before the student is allowed to work in the shop. The student will pass each weld assignment (to the Instructor's satisfaction) before moving on to the next assignment. The student will pass each gouging assignment (to the instructor's satisfaction) before moving on to the next assignment. The student will follow safety rules at all times. The student will be observed (by the instructor) following safety rules and graded according to the following of these rules.

LAB ASSIGNMENTS 40%

CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS AND TESTS 40%

SAFETY 20%

TOTAL 100%

NOTE: All classroom assignments are due on the date assigned. If you are absent it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to get the next assignment. The assignment(s) are due at the beginning of class on the day of your return. You will loose one letter grade for every day (not class period) after that.

ATTENDANCE:

After being tardy three times (for more than 5min.), this will count as one unexcused absence. If you are tardy more than 30 minutes this will count as a half a day unexcused, and if one and a half hours late or more this counts as an unexcused absence. Days missed with a doctors excuse will be excused as well as other absences with approval by the instructor (instructor will decide the legitimacy of the situation whether it will be excused or not) arranged prior to the absence. AFTER HAVING THREE UNEXCUSED ABSENCES YOU WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS.
