Grasmere Primary School Toileting of Children Policy

It is the aim of this policy to inform staff and others that children have the right to be protected, particularly when more vulnerable in the EYFS setting. They have a right to dignity and privacy, and may require assistance to meet health and safety needs.

Risk Assessment and Accountabilities

For the protection and well being of children in the Pre-School setting, Child Protection, Safeguarding and Health and SafetyPolicies are in place.

The school is responsible for:

  • Ensuring that all staff and regular volunteers have been CRB checked by Ofsted. Any person who has not been CRB checked will not be permitted to take a child to the toilet.

The school is responsible for ensuring that:

  • The toilet facilities offer privacy for all children, without compromising safety. Washbasin steps are available.
  • Disposable gloves, cleaning products, hand-wash, hand towels and toilet paper are available.
  • The toilet and washroom areas are well lit and heated so as to encourage children to use them.

Staff are responsible for:

  • Ensuring the adults, who have not been CRB checked, do not take children to the toilet.
  • Ensuring frequent inspections of the toilet area are made, to check that it is clean, tidy and that toilet paper and towels are available. Any spillages of water, or urine and excrement residues must be dealt with immediately, using gloves and cleaning products available.
  • Advising parents through the Admission procedure that simple clothing, which the child can manage alone, will promote independence.

All Staff are responsible for ensuring that:

  • Children have privacy and dignity when using the toilet.
  • Children settling in at Nursery and Reception are shown where the toilet area is, and are frequently reminded to use it.
  • Children are given an opportunity to use the toilet before snacks, walks or outings etc. They are regularly reminded to flush the toilet and wash and dry their hands.
  • Any “accidents” are dealt with promptly and discreetly, using gloves, cleaning products and spare clothes available. Parents will be informed and reassured when they collect their child.
