Grand Rapids Community College Exercise Science Department

Jodi Gee, M.A., CPT, is the Department Chair of the Exercise Science Department. She has taught at Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Valley State University, and Western Michigan University. As an exercise science faculty member, Jodi teaches the importance of educating our youth to be physically activity, lectures on the obesity epidemic in America, and instills the value of being well to all students in her courses.

Michael Boerman has worked at Grand Rapids Community College for over a decade serving as an adjunct instructor, Assistant Athletic Director and Aquatics and Sports Information Coordinator. Michael has trained hundreds of lifeguards, water safety instructors and professional rescuers through the American Red Cross and works as a firefighter when away from campus at GRCC.

Melanie SchieleGady, MA, E-RYT, CFT, is a Professor of Exercise Science. Melanie joined GRCC in 1998 and has used service learning in her classes for 15 years. She feels the community is a great outreach for students to not only connect the student learner outcomes of her classes but for the students to understand their own potential and where they can use their awesome talents and unique abilities to make a difference. Melanie believes the community is an extension of all of our lives and by providing selfless acts of kindness we can gain new perspectives on life and learning.

Community Partner

Dena Rogers, is the Volunteer Coordinator for Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank where she has worked for the nation’s largest charity in hunger relief for over 10 years. She has extensive experience in collaborating with all of the area institutions of higher education including working with individual students, professors, internships, student organizations, and annual days of service. She continues to develop ways to connect the needs of Feeding America with the modern day curriculum.

Community Partner

Linda Vanderbaan, is the Fund Development Manager for Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank for 7 1/2 years. She manages all the marketing, special events, planned giving and financial donor activities for the food bank. Part of the nation’s largest charity in hunger relief--Feeding America has a network of 200 Food banks throughout the US. Linda has 25 years experience working with non-profits.
