INCOME MAINTENANCE CASEWORKER I

SALARY GRADE: 63 SALARY RANGE: $26,151 - $46,146

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The primary purpose of this position is to correctly determine eligibility for the Energy Assistance Programs including the Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) and the Low Income Energy Assistance Program. This position will take and process the Energy assistance application for recipients, monitor continuing compliance with program requirements, respond to the client’s request for assistance regarding their eligibility or other personal matters during the time the case is open, and to make proper referrals to other programs within the department or agency when necessary.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Good mathematical reasoning and computational skills are required. Ability to effectively problem solve, to think logically, to analyze data, gather and compile data, and to negotiate effectively. Ability to cope with daily pressures of a high volume workload and frustrations such as hostile clients, daily deadlines, and frequent systems and policy changes. Ability to communicate with recipients and service providers to obtain information and ability to explain the program, client’s responsibilities, and rules, policies, and procedures. Ability to learn the program area of assignment and all agency programs and services that could affect the client/applicant. Ability to recognize and understand the problems and needs of disadvantaged individuals. Ability to effectively comprehend and communicate verbally and in writing; to maintain confidentiality, to maintain accurate and systematic records, to set priorities, and to accurately proofread completed work. The ability to handle the clientele and high volume of telephone calls. Must be able to accurately key data, have good typing skills, a thorough knowledge of Word, Excel, Internet, E-mail, and a pleasant phone voice.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited associate degree program in Human Services Technology, Social Services Associate, Paralegal Technology, Business Administration, Secretarial Science, or a closely related curriculum; or graduation from high school and two years of paraprofessional, clerical, or other public contact experience which included negotiating, interviewing, explaining information, gathering and compiling of data, analysis of data and/or performance of mathematical or legal tasks with at least one year of such experience being in an income maintenance program; or graduation from high school and three years of paraprofessional, clerical or other public contact experience which included negotiating, interviewing, explaining information, the gathering and compiling of data, the analysis of data and/or the performance of mathematical or legal tasks; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
