Grades 7 & 8 Classwork – reading activity
This activity is designed to give you an opportunity to raise your Participation-
Effort grade during your free time, either at home or in class once you have finished the classwork or test/quiz early. This is a great way to raise your report card grade and learn something!
The activity is reading in Spanish, about a topic that interests you. There are three different ways you can choose to read. For each one you will read an article in Spanish and then do some work to prove that you have understood it and learned something. You can take as long as you want to complete each reading + activity, and can hand it in before the end of the trimester in order to get credit for that marking period. You can do as many readings as you want of this activity and get credit for them all.
OPTION 1
Find and print out an article from a Spanish news website that interests you. An example would be http://www.bbc.com/mundo.
1. Read the article and try to understand it the best you can. Don’t use a dictionary for every word, because it will become very difficult and tiresome to you. Do your best to get the idea of each sentence, not each word.
2. Once you’ve read, write a 7-10 sentence paragraph IN ENGLISH summarizing the article.
3. Write a 5 sentence paragraph IN SPANISH giving your opinion of the article and/or saying what you have learned.
4. DO THIS TWO TIMES – ONCE FOR EACH ARTICLE.
5. Hand all this in on looseleaf, handwritten – not typed, along with the printed out article.
6. For every TWO of these that you do, I will give you a QUIZ GRADE for the trimester. You can easily get a 100% quiz grade just be showing effort and trying your best.
OPTION 2
1. You can use one of the Spanish magazines that I have in school and choose three articles in it to read. (Just see me at lunch time in the faculty room on days that I am in school and I will gladly give you one.)
2. Once you have read any three articles in that magazine that interest you,
you need to do the following for each article:
- Give the name of the article
- Write 5 sentences in English summarizing the article.
- Write 3-5 sentences in Spanish giving your opinion.
- DO THIS THREE TIMES – ONCE FOR EACH ARTICLE.
3. Hand all this in on looseleaf, handwritten – not typed, along with the magazine.
4. For every THREE of these that you do, I will give you a QUIZ GRADE for the trimester. You can easily get a 100% quiz grade just be showing effort and trying your best.
OPTION 3
1. I have a book with short articles to read in Spanish, designed for students. If you wish to read one of these articles, just see me in the faculty room during lunch on the days that I am in school. I will show you the book and you can pick one of interest.
2. Once you have read the article, you do the following:
- Give the name of the article and page numbers.
- Do the activity that comes with the article.
- DO THIS TWO TIMES – ONCE FOR EACH ARTICLE.
3. Hand in the work on looseleaf, handwritten – not typed, along with the article.
4. For every TWO of these that you do, I will give you a QUIZ GRADE for the trimester. You can easily get a 100% quiz grade just be showing effort and trying your best.
You can do any combination of Options 1-3, and as many as you want.
