Introduction

The group 4 project allows you to appreciate the social, ethical and environmental implications of science in a specified context. This is a collaborative team exercise where concepts, skills and experience from across the Group 4 subjects are shared. The emphasis is on interdisciplinary cooperation of the process/methods involved in scientific investigations. This year the following subjects are taking part in the project:

  1. Biology SL/HL
  2. Chemistry SL/HL
  3. Physics SL/HL
  4. ESS SL

Aims and Objectives

  1. To gain experience of investigative and practical research skills.
  2. To collaborate with colleagues from different subject areas, and handle new apparatus and concepts.
  3. To improve organisational skills working as part of a team.
  4. To exchange and recognise ideas of others.
  5. To apply and integrate these ideas successfully into a task.
  6. To display high levels of self motivation and perseverance.
  7. To be able to recognise the limitations and authenticity of data and approach scientific research in an ethical manner.
  8. To pay attention to the environmental impact of experimental research.

Structure and Overview

The project is broken into three phases: planning (plan your project), action (carry out your project) and evaluation (test your project).

Assembly Time (April 18 and May 2) – Planning– ‘brain storming’, planning, predicting, hypothesising, deciding on a focus, choosing apparatus, chemicals and carrying out the research

Group IV Day (May 23) – Action & Evaluation– carrying out the project followed by summarising and presenting your results in the form of a PowerPoint presentation

Assessment

The project is assessed using personal skills. These skills make up 3% of the final grade for each science subject. Basically, personal skills cover the following: Self-motivation and perseverance, working within a team and self-reflection. The exact criteria are given below.

During the project your individual progress and that of the group will be monitored by your teachers. This will be used to award the following grades.These grades are potentially worth 6 points towards your final IA mark (out of 48) which is 3% of your final grade for a group 4 subject.
