GORING & STREATLEY LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

TRANSPORT HISTORY GROUP Sunday 3 May 2015

By road to ‘Cars, Trains and Bikes Event’ at the Brickworks Museum Bursledon, Swanwick Southampton and the nearby Royal Victoria Hospital Chapel and Railway Netley.

What to Expect. We will travel by car hoping to arrive c1100

The Bursledon Brick Works Museum is a fascinating piece of industrial archaeology that has recently received a substantial grant under the National Heritage Landmarks Scheme and it shows. The works made bricks from local clay from 1897 until 1974, were never modernised and were then earmarked for preservation. Still inside are two working steam engines that drove the clay handling equipment, some huge kilns that were fired with an amazing form of draught control and of course large numbers of artefacts and social history items. Outside the North Hampshire Narrow Gauge Trust will be running the site’s railway and have promised us special attention. There is also a collection of traction engines that will be fired up just for us (the owners are Fawley Hill regulars). There will also be many non resident vintage transport items visiting on this gala day.

Nearby is a good place to go on to - the Royal Victoria Country Park on the banks of Southampton Water. The RV Hospital was a major military treatment centre in WW1 and has been the subject of a recent TV programme. Only the huge chapel remain and is a visitor centre. The site also has a railway which will be running – what luck. Also close by is Netley Abbey!

Costs Museum entry is £5 for the over 60’s. The Royal Victoria car park costs £3.50

Food and drink There is a cafe on site but the nearest pubs are a 5 minute drive away. We tried the Elm Tree to the east at and were well served. In the other direction are the Premier Marina Restaurant and the Navigator Inn for those who have a fat pocket. The former was the restaurant in Howard’s Way.

Getting there A fast drive down the A34, M3, M27 east to junction 8 and follow the brown signs. ______
