Good To Great

Overview

Utilizing the concepts that our outlined Jim Collin’s book entitled, Good To Great, our class will discuss how to take the San Dieguito Academy from a good school to a great school.

Step One: read and answer all of the questions from the chapter summaries below.

Step Two: form a group consisting of three to four students and answer the questions that are outlined in the “The San Dieguito Academy’s Good To Great Plan” worksheet.

Step Three: print enough copies for every one in your group.

Step Four: be prepared to discuss your plan with the class on Friday.

Education

Read all of the quotes by famous people on education. Choose six quotes. Write each quote. Define each quote. Explain why you disagree or agree with each quote.

Level 5 Leadership

Read the summary on “Level 5 Leadership.” Make a list of ten characteristics that level 5 leaders should posses. What type of leaders should we not select?

First Who…Then What

Read the summary on “First Who…Then What.” Why did the “genius with a thousand helpers fail?” What primary strategy failed for improving performance? Where should we place the academy’s best personnel? In order to find the best personnel, what characteristics should we be looking for?

Confront The Brutal Facts

Read the summary on “Confront The Brutal Facts.” What should be our primary task? In order for the truth to be heard, what four basic practices should we implement? How should we handle adversity? What is the Stockdale paradox? Why can charisma be a liability? What does leadership begin with? Should we spend time motivating our personnel, why or why not?

Hedgehog Concept

Read the summary on “Hedgehog Concept.” Describe in detail the “hedgehog concept.” Why is the “hedgehog concept considered an understanding? How long might it take for the academy to develop a hedgehog concept?

Culture Of Discipline

Read the summary on “Culture Of Discipline” Why do we need self disciplined people at the academy? Why do bureaucratic cultures arise? Why does the “culture of discipline” involve a duality? How is the culture of discipline different from the tyrant who disciplines? What is the purpose of budgeting?

Technology Accelerators

Read the summary on “Technology Accelerators.” What type of technologies should we avoid? What is the key question about technology that we should be asking? What should we use technology for? How should we react to technology change?

What can the academy the best at? Develop a hedgehog concept for the academy.

Culture Of Discipline

How can we achieve “culture of discipline” at the academy? Create a comprehensive plan that would allow us to create a culture of discipline.

Technology Accelerators

How should the academy utilize technology? List five examples of how we could implement technology better at the academy.

Preparation for Discussion

On Friday, (time permitting) you will be expected to discuss how your group would plan to take SDA from a good school to a great school. In order to do well for this discussion you will need to do the following:

1. Review all of the information so that you know it!

2. Be able to discuss your groups plans without referring to your notes.

3. Be able to use words and phrases from the chapter summaries.

In order to do well, you must be able to apply the concepts from the book to your group’s plans to make SDA a great school.
