“Read about it here first! One of the bargains of the year! OK, I’m slightly overstating my case, but there’s a wine that I highly recommend at a very affordable price that has just come into Majestic. I’ve bought 8 bottles (12 of anything seems a bit much, especially given the fact that there is never a shortage of wine at home).

It’s a wine that I tasted twice some months ago and which I gave exactly the same score to, 91, both times. It’s a serious effort.

It’s the Wakefield Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 ClareValley, which is £7.99 a bottle in Majestic, but if you buy more than one the price dips down to under £6, which is silly for such a good wine. In Australia the winery is known as Taylors, but for legal reasons they had to change this for the UK market (I’m guessing that this is because there is a well known Port house under the same name).”

“Very deep colour. Complex, pure bold blackcurrant fruit dominates here: a lovely expressive wine. Really good.”

“Big, complex, chocolaty nose with huge tobacco hit. Excellent palate, great structure, lovely flavours and tons of acid giving it length and life.”

“Very deep crimson colour with deep crimson hue. Top note of cedar, followed by blackcurrant and spice, showing strong varietal character. Flavours of cedar, liquorice and mocha fill the palate, supported by fine grained tannins. Aftertaste of cedar, mocha and liquorice, with fine dry tannins persisting. Cellar 3-4 years (2010-2011) Alc/Vol: 14.5%.”

“Dark cherry red with hints of violet and a slight purple hue. There are varietal aromas of ripe berry fruit, cassis, black olives and cloves are evident with a hint of liquorice, nutmeg and peppermint. An underlying bouquet of spice, cedar chocolate and faint vanilla is also evident from the French Oak maturation. A long and generous palate with fleshy concentrated sweet varietal flavours. A wine of elegant suppleness with persistent rounded tannins, a flowing balance and a seamless finish. Will benefit from cellaring. A wine for red meat dishes. Beef, Lamb or game. Well cooked and strongly flavoured. Will also accompany a cheese platter quite well, especially after careful cellaring.”

Producer

DESCRIPTION: This cabernet sauvignon, produced from family estate in the Clare Valley, South Australia, represents the 33rd vintage since the first in 1973.

Vintage 2005 was warm and dry with the average temperatures for January and February below the norm. Conditions from October 2004 until the end of February 2005 were dry and ripening patterns on the estate were unusual as almost everything becoming ripe at the same time.

The fruit for this wine was harvested in March at optimal ripeness and then de-stemmed and crushed. Fermentation was carried out in the original “Potter” fermenters at the winery, which allow for excellent control of skin maceration and colour extraction. The wine was matured for at least 12 months in French oak prior to bottling.

WINE COLOUR: Deep red with a purple hue.

WINE BOUQUET: Wine has fresh and lifted varietal aromas of cassis, red currant fruit and mint. Subtle hints of cedar and tobacco add to the complexity of the aroma which is something like a brandy soaked Christmas pudding.

WINE PALATE: This is a wine with rich, ample flavours of ripe cassis, berry fruit and licorice. Maturation in French oak barrels is evident with subtle flavours of cedar and tobacco adding complexity to a wine that is rich and mouth filling with great length.

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHING: A hearty red meat dish or with soft cheeses and dried fruits.

CELLARING NOTES: Immediately approachable but will benefit from careful cellaring up to 2015.
