Half Moon, the Borough’s leading theatre company for young people is offering a new FREE programme of continuing professional development, available to all staff in the Borough’s educational settings.

This free programme, offers a series of practical sessions, covering all phases of education, delivered by theatre and drama professionals and some of the Borough’s most respected teachers.

The sessions are tailored to provide structured and practical ways:

o  to extend subject based skills and meet curriculum needs

o  to develop cross-curricular initiatives

o  for teachers to review and improve their own performance in the

classroom

The sessions:

Creative Practices in Early Learning

When: Friday 18 March, 9.15am - 4pm
Where: Half Moon, E1
Who: All subject staff – Early Years/Foundation, Primary KS1

A practical workshop focussing upon numeracy and emotional literacy. The day will explore 2D and 3D shapes, narrative building and simple non-verbal drama. The experience will be framed by watching Half Moon’s new theatre piece, Plum And Pickle, a simple fusion of theatre and hip-hop with few words. The day will include a presentation from Earlyarts exploring the importance of aspirational creative practice for early learning and development.

Drama for Non-Specialists in the Primary Classroom
When: Friday 10 June, 9.15am - 3.30pm
Where: Half Moon, E1
Who: All subject staff – Foundation, Primary KS1/KS2
The day comprises of two practical sessions – Active Literacy and Drama as a Tool for After-School Learning. Exploring using active drama strategies to develop and enhance children’s learning in the classroom and as an after-school activity. Includes an opportunity to explore curriculum planning.
Voice, Physicality and Classroom Practice
When: Friday 17 June, 4 - 6pm
Where: Half Moon, E1
Who: All subject staff – Early Years/Foundation, Primary KS1/KS2, Secondary KS3/KS4, Post 16/Colleges
Explore how you can use your voice and physicality to deliver effective lessons, engage your students and explore ways of developing classroom presence. This practical session will be tailored to your particular needs and interests and will work in a way that is comfortable for all involved. The session will be led by Drama AST Julia Williams.
Creative Outdoor Spaces as Places of Creative Learning
When: Friday 8 July, 9.15 - 4pm
Where: The Community House, Saunders Ness Road @ George Green School, E14
Who: All subject staff – Early Years/Foundation, Primary KS1
Participants will take part in a series of hands-on activities that develop creative practices with children in outdoor spaces. The day will follow children’s lines of enquiry, using drama and storytelling to explore the outdoors (gardens, parks, woods), meet mini-beasts and create outdoor learning environments. The day will conclude with action planning offering strategies of how outdoor spaces can be used to develop the curriculum. The day will include an update from Earlyarts on current trends in early years practices.


Further Support - participants may also be able to benefit from a one-to-one support session at their place of work. This individually tailored session might take the form of mentoring, observations, co-teaching, curriculum planning, guidance on how to cascade their new skills to colleagues, etc. Please ask when booking your session for further details.

This programme is based on the pilot CPD programme funded through Find Your Talent in 2010 and aims to lay the foundations for future professional development opportunities across the Borough, where the teachers’ needs are addressed and their practice challenged to improve standards of teaching for the children and young people who go to school in Tower Hamlets.
