BINGHAM MINERS
SOFTBALL
Welcome to Bingham Softball. We are glad you are interested in becoming a member of the 8x State Champion Bingham Miner Softball team. We hope tryouts go well for you and look forward to enjoying the 2016 season with you. As you contemplate your decision to tryout, we want you to be well informed of the expectations for both parents and players within the program. Your presence at tryouts indicates that you have read and agree to abide by all the terms and expectations in this info packet. The success we have here at Bingham has been hard won and talent alone has not been the deciding factor. There is a difference here at Bingham, a difference that we hope to maintain for many years to come. The standards and expectations in this packet help us develop and build on that difference. They are well proven, time tested qualities and commitments found in any championship level team and they have brought many years of success to our program on and off the field. We hope you find our standards, expectations, goals, and aspirations appealing and choose to come join us at tryouts.
STANDARDS
Championsbehave like champions before they are champions!
-Bill Walsh
GRADES
Players can try out with a GPA of 2.0 or higher. However, the academic expectations are much higher for this program and players with a GPA lower than 3.0 will be expected to meet specific contract goals in order to maintain playing status.
BEHAVIOR
All players are expected to exhibit the highest standards of behavior on and off the field. We are representatives of Bingham High and the South Jordan community. As such, you are expected to display behavior that earns respect for Bingham and South Jordan at all times. In addition to strict adherence to the UHSAA behavioral contract, players are expected to refrain from profanity, cheating, negative comments, gossip, emotional or physical abuse, racism, and any other behavior that reflects badly on our program or community. The expectation is that we are respected not only for our quality of play, but for our character as well. Derogatory or inflammatory comments toward anyone will not be tolerated. Comments that invoke anything but mutual respect are not acceptable. Players who use behaviors and/or communications of any form that convey a lack of respect or sportsmanship, cause emotional pain, or diminish the integrity of another person or group will be disciplined. This could include dismissal from the team.
All players and parents are required to sign the UHSAA Behavioral Contract. Please understand that infractions of this contract can result in suspension for as little as a single game, or for an entire season. The decisions are not in our hands. They are handled at the administrative and UHSAA level. We do not play a role in the decisions and it is not up to us to grant leniency or mediate discipline. Please do not put us or your fellow teammates in a bad position by choosing to break your commitment to them through selfish behaviors on your part. Your signature on the UHSAA contract is part of your commitment to being the best teammate possible. Infractions of the contract are based on selfishness and defiance which are behaviors that have no place in the Bingham program.
TIME EXPECTATIONS
All players and parents of players that make the team willbe given access to a calendar that will help you see upcoming events. If you set it up to do so, you will be immediately notified of changes when we make them on the calendar.
PRACTICESMonday thru Friday, some Saturdays.
We practice every afternoon in a 2-2.5 hr block of time between 2:00 and 6:00. Some variations may occur for school events, study halls, or captain led activities. Saturday mornings should be kept free for practices as needed. Most team activities such as U of U/BYU game, ropes course, and team fundraisers, occur on Fridays and/or Saturdays.
GAMES
The JV/Varsity schedule is attached. Other than tournaments, JV plays on the same days as varsity. All JV and varsity players are expected to be in the dugout during both JV and Varsity games. Most Varsity games begin at 3:30 or 4:00pm, JV plays right after the varsity and has a 1.5 hour time limit.
ACTIVITIES
Many team activities are scheduled throughout the season. Team dinners, ropes courses, U of U/BYU games, service projects, talent show, etc. are scattered throughout the schedule. Much of the unity that this team is built upon comes from these activities. Thus, they are not to be considered optional. Players are expected to be at all team dinners and activities. A schedule with specific dates for activities will come out once the team is set and captains have had time to finalize desired activities and dates.
TRYOUTS
Tryouts will begin Feb 25 and continue for several days. We could post a first cut as soon as the first day. When a cut is made, it will be posted on our softball website at binghamminers.org. Names that are on the list should report to the next tryout. For purposes of respect, we will not list players that have been cut, just the ones that are continuing on.
Exact start times during tryout week will depend on the weather and how well our Boys’ Basketball team is doing at state. Miners support each other so if we have a tryout scheduled at a time the boys end up playing, it will be moved.
If weather forces us inside, we will be coordinating with several other groups for the small amount of available gym space. We ask that you be flexible and patient with changes that might be necessary and keep your schedule as free as possible during tryout week.
Here is the anticipated plan for the first two days*:
Feb 29March 1
Good Weather/Outside3:00-5:153:00-5:15
Bad Weather/Inside 6-8:003:15-4:30
*PLEASE CHECK OUR TEAM PAGE ON THE BINGHAMMINERS.ORG WEBSITE
AFTER FEB. 23
for any updates to the schedule and a more complete schedule for the entire first week.
CLOTHING:Be prepared to play BOTH inside and out every day. This means that, in addition to your playing gear, you need to have both tennis shoes and cleats, sweats, warm gear, and water every session. Players should bring a change of sweats and socks for days we start outside then move into the gym. Please mark all your equipment with your name.
PHYSICALS
A new physical is required each school year. Athletes need to have a physical on file at Bingham dated after June 1, 2015 before they can compete in a game. Players can use their own physician to get a physical but will need to make sure they take the physical form required by the UHSAA to the physician to be filled out completely.
For those that are interested, Dr. Mark Rosen will be here to do physicals on Saturday, March 5th at 9am in the vending hall.If you chooseto do your physical with him, please come with your form filled out and signed by a parent.Forms are available on registermyathlete or from Cynthia Cox.
Cost is $25.00. Please write checks to RPT. Please email Cynthia Cox with questions.
PARENTS at TRYOUTS
Parents, you are welcome to come and watch tryouts but we ask that you not talk with either coaches or players while we are working out.
Also, please seriously consider the emotions that are involved with not making the team before your daughter participates in try outs. We have a lot of talented and experienced players here at Bingham. We will keep 20-27 players. That means that even players with good skills might not make the team. If you and/or your daughter can not handle the possibility of being cut, please do not allow her to try out at all. We certainly are not here to break hearts, but the reality is that here will be players cut, and one of them could be your daughter.
