Glass Bottles Shine at Craft Brewers Conference

The men and women of the glass container manufacturing industry are helping tell the story of why consumers should choose craft beer in the glass package they help make: “craft” beer deserves a “craft” bottle.

“Craft Beer. Craft Bottles,” a multi-media campaign unveiled earlier this spring, lets customers and consumers know about the pride the workforce takes in producing glass containers. Elements of the ongoing outreach effort, unveiled in May at the Craft Brewers Conference in Philadelphia, include a video featuring ArdaghGlass and O-I employees as well as infographics, photos of workers in plants, and outreach to trade and social media.

Craft Brewers 2016 Conference Escalator Ad Branding

The video shown at the Craft Brewers Conference, is featured on the Industry Resources section of the GPI website and the front page of Upgradetoglass.org. It’s part of a series of interviews in which members of the workforce talk about the packaging they produce for premium products, the glass plants’ multi-generational heritage, and their commitment to quality.

An escalator-length banner at the Craft Brewers Conference exhibitor entrance greeted thousands of attendees with “Craft Beer. Craft Bottles” messaging to promote glass packaging and encouraged them to #ChooseGlass.

The Glass Packaging Institute also featured new craft beer consumer survey data at the conference, highlightingthe finding that 64% of craft beer consumers prefer glass packaging for its freshness.

Coalition Formed to Strengthen Glass Recycling

To strengthen glass recycling in the U.S., the Glass Packaging Institute has teamed up with beverage leaders including Diageo and New Belgium Brewing, and the glass processing and recycling industry to create the Glass Recycling Coalition (GRC).

“GPI is excited to partner with stakeholders along the entire value chain to work together on practical and targeted solutions for returning more recycled glass back to manufacturers for new bottles and jars,” said GPI President Lynn Bragg.”For glass container and fiberglass manufacturers, the demand for recycled glass dramatically exceeds the supply.”

The nearly two dozen member organizations of the GRC will work together to develop strategies to increase the quality and availability of recycled glass for making new glass bottles and jars, assist municipalities with smart recycling decisions for glass, and establish a reliable network of glass recycling resources.

Central States’ Spring Meeting Highlights Importance of Glass Recycling

The Central States Protective League heard a presentation about the Glass Recycling Coalitionduring their spring meeting in Shakopee, MN. The Central States League works with GPI to support glass recycling at plants across the Midwest, and opposes legislative efforts to replace Iowa’s beverage container deposit refund program.

High quality recycled glass, suitable for remelting in furnaces, iscollected from the 10 states where similar recycling programs exist. GPI will continue to coordinate with the GMP to ensure these programs remain in place and robust.
