Denver Public Schools has specific standards that each student should be able to meet or exceed before they graduate. This course will focus on the following standards:

1. Students understand that science is a search for patterns in nature and that these patterns suggest broad concepts which link the scientific disciplines.

2. Students know that science is a framework for understanding the natural world based on experimentation and logical analysis. Students understand the processes of scientific investigation and are able to design, conduct, communicate, and evaluate such investigations. Students use their understanding of science in a decision-making process.

3. Students know and understand interrelationships among science, technology, and human activity and how these affect the world.

4. Students know and understand the structure, processes, and interactions of Earth’s systems and the dynamics of the solar system and the universe.

a)Plate Tectonics – Students learn that the Earth is dynamic as evidenced by crustal plate movement.

b)Geologic History – Students learn that the Earth undergoes natural change over time resulting in surface features that are evident in Colorado.

c)Weather & Global Climate – Students learn that energy transfer within the atmosphere and oceans influences weather patterns and global climate.

d)Cosmos – Students learn how astronomers know that Earth is a very small object in a very large cosmos.

e)Natural Resources – Students learns that natural resources are used to maintain and improve quality of life.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

All students are expected to follow these general expectations:

1. I will be responsible in order to promote learning.

2. I will act in a safe, healthy and respectable manner.

3. I will follow all directions, verbal and written.

4. I will respect others, their rights and their property.

5. I will continually observe the world around me.

MATERIALS

EVERY day - paper, pencil, graph paper, notebook, colored pencils, ruler

OFTEN - calculator, protractor, compass

WARNING – Personal electronics (cell phones, iPods, MP3s, games, etc.) need to be enjoyed during off periods. If they are in use during class, they will be confiscated.

First offense – student pickup after school

Second offense – Parent pickup after school

Third offense – office referral for insubordination

HOMEWORK/STUDY EXPECTATIONS

Most of your homework will depend on how hard you are working in class. If you work in class when time is given to you, you shouldn’t have a lot of homework. Study often!!

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN CLASS

  1. Read directions.

  3. Listen to directions.
  4. Follow directions.
  5. Study often.
  6. Ask for help when needed.
  7. Take advantage of opportunities.
  8. Take notes
  9. Read the board every day.
  10. Use resources provided.
  11. Think before you ask.
  12. Turn in work ON TIME.

HELP

I will do everything I can to help you be successful in this class because your success is important to me. I will provide you with the best materials I can find to meet the standards, and I will grade assignments in a timely manner and keep accurate records. Science can be a difficult class so you need to ask for help when it is needed. Please be aware that I don’t give “free” answers. If you ask a question, you need to expect guidance in locating the answer on your own. If you need help on a specific assignment, you need to tell me before it is due and we will work out a time to work together and the assignment will not be late. I will be available before school, after school (limited days) and during my open periods in Room 205. Please let me know if you are coming in during the day.
