Course Objectives
The adoption of necessary knowledge in the field of organization and management of seaports, with particular attention to familiarization of students with: the specificity of port management of state and county significance in Croatia, management models of seaports in the world, determining the hinterland areas, port functions, organizations designs, economic indicators and other factors of which depends what will be the business of each port.Learning Outcomes
After finishing this course students will be able to do the following:- Define and interpret basic terms of port and port system
- Describe the features of the port as creator of multiplicative effects
- Distinguish types of sea ports
- Explain trends of port development
- Argument the importance and influence of certain phenomenon(globalization, computerization...) on the development and competitiveness of the port
- Analyze and apply basic economic thesison individual cases of port practices (the calculation of the cost of travel, freight, etc.).
Course Outline & Topics
THE ROLE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF PORTS. Definition of port, classification of ports and port terminology.HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF PORTS. Development of ports since ancient times to today.
INTERNATIONAL MARITIME TRANSPORT AND PORT. Development of the international maritime trade and development of ports as a result of increasedmaritime transport of goods.
RELEVANT FACTORS TO THE ROLE AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE PORT.Natural port benefits. Technical port benefits. Labour organization in port. Customs regime. Tariffs and tariff policy. Economic strength of port hinterland. The role of state in development of ports and measures of port policy. Political relations.
GRAVITATIONAL PORT ZONES. The term and meaning of port gravitational zone. Relevant indicators for sizing the gravitational zone. Methods for determining the size of gravitational zone.
PORT FUNCTIONS. Traffic, trade and industrialport function.
PARTICIPANTS IN PORT BUSINESS. Administrative authorities and economic subjects.
ORGANIZATION OF PORT SYSTEM COMPONENTS. Determining the regionsand port specialization.
PORT POLICY AND PORT BUSINESS POLICY. Types of port management.
DEVELOPMENT PLANNING OF PORT SYSTEM. Methodology of development planning of ports. Forecast of port traffic. Financial and economic evaluation of the plan. The types of development plans. Long-term, medium-term and short-term plans.
ORGANIZATION OF WORK IN THE PORT. The term and types of cargo in the port. Traffic-technological process in the port. The documents in the port business. Daily operational planning. Improving traffic-technological processes and operating systems in the port. Congestion port.
ECONOMIC INDICATORS OF BUSINESS SUCCESS. Determining the value of port services. Port charges and tariffs, port revenues. Costs in the port business. Labour productivity. Business efficiency. Operating profitability.
