GCSE French (Mock) Oral Exam preparation

The mock orals will be on Thursday 4th or Friday 5th December.

You have approximately 12 minutes before the beginning of the test to prepare for the role play. You will be given a card to help you prepare the topic and what you will say. You may take any notes which you make for this into the exam.

We do the role play first (approx 1 minute) The best preparation which you can do for this is to ensure you know all the verbs on the MP3 file which you can download from my blog. You will have to perform four short tasks for the role play. You will be able to prepare for three of them using the pointers on the role play card. The fourth task will require you to respond to an unprepared question and is indicated on the role play card by the symbol(!) You can still think about what might be asked for this question during your preparation time. Remember that for the role play you should keep your answers as simple as possible, and remember to give the number of details mentioned on the role play card.

After the role play you do your prepared presentation. It should last roughly 90 seconds. You can only take about 10-15 words of French notes with you to use, and no full sentences. I advise that you write down the most difficult words/verbs. You may bring as many pictures as you like as prompts.

After the presentation we then have a follow-up discussion on the same topic – for 90 seconds. You may know these questions in advance: they are the four questions which we prepared to follow on from your presentation on home area/environment i.e. what there is in Oxford for tourists, what your ideal town would be like, what you do personally to help the environment (present tense) and what you have done recently to help the environment (past tense).

The final part of the exam is conversation (6-8 minutes) For the mock exam we will only have prepared questions on two topics i.e.

holidays/tourism (you have these written out in your speaking test book and I have posted model answers both in written and MP3 form on my blog).

leisure (we shall be preparing these next week/the week of the mock exam).

In the final speaking test you will not know which two (or three) topics will come up in the test: it will be two or three of the following: holidays/tourism, leisure, education/work; home life; personal relationships. We shall prepare answers to education, home life and personal relationships in the Hilary term.
