Registered Nurse training sessions
These sessions provide professional learning and development opportunitiesfor Registered
Nurses working in care homes across County Durham andDarlington. Enabling Registered
Nurses to update their proficiencyandunderpinningknowledge and understanding of specific
areas of care.
Full day sessions are £40 (plus VAT) per person and half day sessions £20 (plus VAT) per
person. Thesecharges are used to cover venue costs, any remainingfunds will be used forfuture
training.
Sessions available in February 2017:
- End of life care (full day)
- Long term conditions (epilepsy) (half day)
- Long term conditions (COPD) (half day)
- Subcutaneous fluids and syringe drivers (half day)
- Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeds (half day)
- Continence -including supra-pubic, male and female urethral catheterisation and UTIs(full day)
- Tracheostomy (half day)
- Venepuncture (half day)

Modes of delivery
A range of teaching and learning strategies are utilised to ensure the benefits ofthese sessions
including seminars, experiential learning, scenarios, problembased learning, case study work,
simulations and discussion.
Sessions are facilitated by Teesside University and take place in County Durham.
Eligibility
- Registered Nurses employed by a care home in County Durham and Darlington (full time, part time or bank).
- Registered Nurses employed by a nursing agency that regularly work in care homes in County Durham and Darlington.
End of life care
Includes national policy and best practice, the practicalities of Deciding Right (Advance Care Planning, CPR decisions, advance decisions to refuse treatment, emergency health care plans, end of life care registers), legal aspects of Deciding Right, implementation of the Mental Capacity Act, symptom management and managing bereavement.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) feeds
Half day sessions to develop practitioner’s knowledge and understanding of this widely used and very important intervention. A client centred approach underpins content, we will be exploring the reasons for insertion and use, best practice guidelines for the management and care of PEG tubes when administering nutrition, fluids and medications will be covered. Potential problems associated with the use of PEG tubes will be addressed from a proactive perspective.

Subcutaneous fluids and syringe drivers
Half day session includes rationale and indications for administration and discontinuing subcutaneous fluids and syringe-driver medication. Ethical issues will be considered and how shared decision-making is fundamental to ensuring a person-centred approach. Also advantages and disadvantages of the subcutaneous route, acceptable subcutaneous cannula insertion sites, information on most common drugs given subcutaneous as this informs care considerations.

Continence - supra-pubic, male and female urethral catheterisation, UTIs
Includes urinary tract infections, identifying when a catheter is necessary and when a catheter needs changing, correct type and size of catheter to use, insertion of a urethral catheter, removal and replacement of a supra-pubic catheter, potential hazards and complications, taking urine samples, trial without catheter.

Tracheostomy
Half day session to familiarise people with the reasons for tracheostomy and the care and management of a tracheostomy.

Venepuncture
Half day sessionat the end of the session practitioners should be able to: describe what venepuncture is and why it is undertaken, demonstrate the anatomy and physiology of the vein, identify the appropriate sites for performing venipuncture, list the complications which can occur whilst carrying out venipuncture, discuss the standard precautions undertaken throughout the procedure, demonstrate and practice venepuncture on a dummy arm.
