BACKGROUND:

The Department of Computer Information Science (CIS) in the College of Business Administration (CBA) proposes a new CIS minor effective Fall 2015, as well as the discontinuation of two existing minors (Business Computer Programming and Managerial Computing).

RESOURCES CONSULTED

Dr. Larisa Preiser-Houy, Associate Dean, College of Business Administration

Dr. Sonya Zhang, Computer Information Systems Department

Dr. Dan Manson, Chair of Computer Information Systems Department

Associate Deans

Dr. Claudia Pinter-Lucke, Associate Provost

DISCUSSION:

Comparison of the two existing vs. the new proposed CIS minors:

The new minor “Computer Information Systems” can be completed in 28 units. The current requirement for the two existing minors “Business Computer Programming” and “Managerial Computing” is 36 units, excluding prerequisites.

This has several clear advantages:

-First, the new minor should be able to attract a larger number of students since it can be completed more easily. (As can be seen in the table below, only 4 and 6 students are taking the two current minors.)

-Second, the number of units will be comparable to that in other minors in the CBA, which require at most 28 units.

-Third, asmaller number of required courses and a larger number of the required elective courseswould allow students to better tailor the minor to their needs in preparation for their future industry employment, and would also allow students to better specialize in the area of their interest.

Current 2 CIS minors:

Minor / Quarters Offered / Total # of students / # prerequisite courses / # required courses / # required elective courses
Business Computer Programming / Ongoing / 4 / 4
