Social Work Intern

GENERAL STATEMENT DUTIES

This is intern level work, performing supervised social work. Maximum length of service: 1 year.Social work interns work under Garfield JubileeProgram Manager and collaborate with other members of GJA teams to assess student needs and develop and implement comprehensive service plans that promote students’ legal and life goals.Strong candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to working with indigent youth and underprivileged communities. Creativity, responsibility, empathy, perseverance, and excellent written and oral communication skills are important qualities for effective social workers in a defense office.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITES

The responsibilities of social work interns include:

•Assessing Student Needs.

•Interviewing students and performing assessments under the supervision of a staffworker to determine student needs, including psychiatric, social, emotional, and educational needs.

•Through records collection and collateral interviews – including interviews of parents, guardians, and other relevant family members – gathering and analyzing information relevant to assessing client needs.

•Developing and maintaining competency in assessing and meeting the needs of every GJA student.

•Providing crisis mediation to clients as needed under the supervision of a staff worker.

•Developing and Implementing Service Plans.

•Developing social service plans under the supervision of a staff worker – including sentencing plans that present the court with compelling alternatives to incarceration, and plans for provision of services on release from incarceration – for GJAstudents, driven by students expressed interests and goals.

•Becoming and remaining familiar with relevant service providers, including community- based providers of mental health care services, job training, counseling, and housing; conducting site visits to assess the quality of service providers and their suitability for students; and creating and maintaining a service provider database for staff.

•Becoming and remaining familiar with the range of government benefits that may be available to students and their families, and with the mechanisms for accessing those benefits.

•Making referrals, finding placements, and assisting with logistics and enrollment to help students and their families’ access needed services and benefits.

•Maintaining regular contact with programs providing services to students, monitoring service quality and client compliance.

•Evaluating client progress towards service plan goals, and counseling students to help ensure that goals are met.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Creativity and flexibility in solving problems and meeting challenges.
  • Enrollment in an accredited bachelor’s level social work program and independent practice insurance as required by the educational institution.
  • Willingness to submit to a background check.
  • Experience and Knowledge.
  • Understanding of Microsoft Word and Excel computer applications.

LOCATION: The student intern position is based out of Garfield Jubilee Association Office on 5323 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh PA. However, numerous tasks will require traveling off-site such as home visit and training.
