Statement of inquiry
Every citizen needs to understand how to prortray country pride and why symbols are still relevant today and why new symbols are needed.
Inquiry questions
Factual: What symbolizes a country’s pride?
Conceptual: Why are symbols needed to create a country’s pride?
Debatable: Should symbols be limited when determining a country’s pride?
Objectives / Summative assessment
Students will learn how to useTypography,Brushes and Swatches in Illustrator.
Studnets will synthesize the meaning of use Symbolism and Allegory into a visual respresentation.
Students will understand why symbols are used for national pride. / Students will randomly choose a country to Design a New Currency using Symbolic and Allegorical Symbols of the Nation. Your New Money must promote the nation, reflect and incorporate the values and unique aspects of society, it's character, culture and contributions to the world.
Criterion D: Responding / Relationship between summative assessment task(s) and statement of inquiry:
Money is a national symbol in all countries. Creating an update dollar bill will allow students to visually represent national pride.
Approaches to learning (ATL)
During this unit students will use
1. Thinking skills based on the inquiry of the investigation of the country’s pride and current events happening at the time. Students will be able to compare them to the symbols of local and global countries.
2. Communications skills will be used to visual depict the students understanding of which symbols are important, both then and now.
4. Self-management skills will be shown on completeing the necessary components in a timely manner based on overall project goals.
5. Research skills will be stressed to find the most important symbols of a country both in the past and now using a multitude of sources.

Content / Learning process
Country history, symbolism, visual representation, Adobe Illustrator skills, Understand the difference between photoshop and illustrator. Approches to learning especially time management and investigation skills. Having students use a variety of resources will help them use their inquiry skills to better understand the concept. / Research will be done using an online graphic organizer. Print and online tutorials will be provided to teach sketching, Most of the world’s currency uses the following types of images to promote their identity:
Patriots – Heroes – Warriors –- Battles – Famous Politicians – Portraits of Historical People from the Past or Present
Flora and Fauna – Unique Plants and Animals – National Parks – State Flowers – Indigenous People or Animals.
No copyrighted cartoon characters, no celebrities.
• Begin researching iconic images that represent the country, and also try these other sources of inspiration:
Architecture – Famous buildings – Landmarks – Landscapes – Monuments – Geographical Features - Official Seals – Mottos – Shields – Cornucopias – National Symbols and Seals – Allegorical references from myth or legend – Famous Sports Legends – Flags

Differentiation
I will make sure students do a country unrelated to their heritage to learn the global context and perception of different countries. Students will present their rationale for their new dollar and share why each symbol was chosen. Video tutorials will be provided for ESOL learners and one on one instruction. Bellwork during this unit will be analyzing art from different countries. Students will be encouraged to share their percetions of their heritage.
