Digital Initiatives Update (submitted by A. Kosavic)

Internet Archive

As of January 5, we were down to our final 1290 of allocated funds. The Internet Archive digitized a subset of Lambrinos material with the remaining allocated. There are still some outstanding items that have been identified, de-duped, catalogued and are ready to send to the Internet Archive. The estimated total cost for digitizing these remaining items would be about $4500 USD.

YorkSpace

A new YorkSpace collection “Department of Dance” was created to house the work of Professor Patrick Alcedo from the Faculty of Fine Arts. http://pi.library.yorku.ca/dspace/handle/10315/2909

A new YorkSpace community, “Barbara Godard Collection” was created to celebrate the work of Barbara Godard. http://pi.library.yorku.ca/dspace/handle/10315/2911

Theses were also a big focus for this month. Proquest thesis data has been compiled and extracted by Bob in such a way that it can be used to supplement existing data from the catalogue. This data has now been added into one large table of thesis metadata, and has been useful as a way to double check errors in thesis metadata. A first phase of nearly 1,000 theses will be ready for test ingest soon.

Michael, Anna, Julia and I have had several meetings to devise a workflow for ASC scanning where items are deposited directly into YorkSpace or DarkSpace, depending on permissions requirements. A YorkSpace submissions template tailor made for ASC images has been created and is now being tested by ASC.

York Digital Journals

Tessera’s OJS design is now live on the YDJ site, but we are waiting on descriptive site text. Digitized backfiles are being loaded as the journal is prepared for prime time.

A recent graduate (undergraduate degree), Ivana Sevic, came to talk to me about starting an e-journal for new scholars through the Refuge Research Network. I talked to her about the need for Faculty advisors and sponsorship, and the many responsibilities of running a journal. She is in the early stages of research.

I met with Aleksandra Kaminska, the new managing editor of the journal Public

(www.publicjournal.ca). She is interested in making the “Public” archive available online. We discussed open access models and copyright concerns. She will further confer with her advisory board about this project.

Allyson from the Homeless Hub is interested in starting a journal on homelessness to complement the project. I provided her with some preliminary information on the process, and discussed the York Digital Journals service with her.

Other

I met with Omar Mohammed from UIT to catch up regarding what’s new in our departments. Omar indicated that there is much interest in private collaborative workspaces for scholars. IUTS is able to offer TikiWiki for free, and ORION offers the Igloo platform for the same purpose free of charge.

UIT is compiling a catalogue of tech services offered on campus that should be released soon. I asked if YorkSpace, York Digital Journals, and York Conference Server could be included. Omar was interested in adding this information in a subsequent version of the upcoming catalogue.
