Friday’s Fantastic FasoFund Fundraising

On Friday 20TH April, Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School held a non–uniform day to support the Fasofund, a charity that helps orphans with Aids in Africa.

All the pupils and teachers at B.R.G.S. took part in the event – Dr. Edwards didn’t even wear a tie! All the money raised went to a good cause.

The event was started because Mrs Haslam was going to run the London Marathon on Sunday 23rd April 2007. The pupils sponsored her, all the time hoping that she would be able to reach the magical time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. She ran to raise money for the Fasofund and to try and get into some American marathons, competing with some top athletes!

With every student from B.R.G.S. taking part in the fundraising, we raised over £1000! The charity that the money is going to is the FasoFund, which specializes in delivering sustainable help to small communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. The area that we are particularly concentrating on is a small village called Kidds Beach, a place where the life expectancy of an average woman is 37 due to the massive problem of Aids.

The FasoFund helps the children and adults in Africa through:

1)  providing food

2)  giving good healthcare

3)  giving education.

ATROCIOUS

Upon being asked what they thought about the situation in Africa, Aaron Barlow, pupil of B.R.G.S, replied: “It’s atrocious how they’re mistreated. We should be helping them much more than just this.”

When asked what she thought about the situation in Africa, Miss Strickland, teacher at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School, replied: “I think it’s awful and I think we should do as much as we can to help them. Fundraising is good, but really they need government support.” This reporter whole-heartedly agrees with that statement!

When confronted with the question of whether or not he thought fundraising was an effective way of raising money, Thomas Jackson, pupil in 7R replied with the answer: “Yes, because it helps all the starving children with Aids. It raises quite a lot of money to help them.”

SPECTACULAR

Mrs Haslam, teacher at B.R.G.S. managed to finish the London marathon in a spectacular time of 3 hours and 31 minutes – and that was with unbelievably high temperature of around 24 degrees centigrade! One man in the race was running to raise money for helping children with Leukaemia – he is running at the speed of approximately one step every 6 seconds – now that sounds to me like the best way to travel! It is estimated that he will finish on Sunday 27th April – in 2007, of course!

Everybody is proud of Mrs Haslam and think her achievement is wonderful. She beat many great athletes and, if the temperature had been the same as it was last year, she would easily have thrashed her old record. Unfortunately, she didn’t manage to reach the time that she had hoped for, but she still managed to put in a wondrous effort.

Everybody in B.R.G.S. enjoyed the non-uniform day and had a great time before the weekend. All the teachers – yes, ALL of them – also enjoyed the non-uniform day alongside the children. All in all, with a massive amount of money raised for charity and a school full of happy kids and adults, it was really quite a successful event!
