SLING TAKES OTT SERVICE MULTI-STREAM

FOX NETWORKS ANCHOR NEW OFFERING

Dish Network is expanding its Sling TV OTT service, with an offering now in beta testing that allows subscribers to simultaneously stream programming on up to three devices per household—whether physically located at home or somewhere else that Internet service is available. The new multi-stream service is priced at $20 per month and is anchored by content from FOX Networks—including the FOX broadcast network in markets where the network has a local O&O station. It also includes the FOX regional sports networks where they are available.

Sling TV CEO Roger Lynch said customers have been asking for the ability to stream on more than one device at a time and additional channels since the service launched. He called the new multi-stream service “the first step in answering their requests.”

The basic “Best of Live TV” multi-stream service includes content from FOX Broadcasting, FOX Sports, FX, National Geographic and other popular networks from AMC,A&E, Turner, Scripps and Univision. Sling TV's existing single-stream “Best of Live TV” service, which includes content from Disney and ESPN Networks, is unchanged with the introduction of this new multi-stream service.

Similar to Sling TV’s single-stream service, beta multi-stream customers can tailor their experience by adding “Extras” at additional charge, including “Hollywood Extra,” “Lifestyle Extra,” “World News Extra,” HBO and Cinemax.

OTT SHARE OF VIEWING TO DOUBLE IN DECADE

A new study from The Diffusion Group (TDG) predicts that Broadband Video will grow from 17% of total viewing minutes in 2015 to 38% by 2025, up 81%, while Legacy TV will decline from 80% of total viewing minutes to 53%, down 34%. The shift is being driven by both the improved quality of OTT streaming and the availability of more and more content—including quite a bit that’s coming from Legacy TV producers.

“Professionally-produced, TV-quality video is now accessible from a widening array of sources and services, in virtually any context, and on multiple devices,” notes Joel Espelien, TDG senior analyst and author of the new report. “Though operators and networks are now aware of these trends, few have any idea what they mean for the future of TV viewing—that is, the extent to and rate at which they will redefine the viewing mix in the next decade.”

According to Espelien, we are now squarely in the era of “quantum media,” a future TDG first described in 2006 and forecast would come to pass by 2015. With the coming to pass of multi-platform viewing, TDG is now out to quantify how these trends will impact video viewing time over the next decade.
